Fast Initialisation of Camshaft Position
A phase pick-up disc (1) is fastened to the sprocket of the intake camshaft, making it possible to determine the camshaft position directly on starting via the camshaft sensor (Hall principle) (2). The advantage of this is that the exact fuel quantity required per cylinder for the given operating condition can be injected right from the start of injection. This is made possible by the different subdivisions of the phase pick-up disc, each of which is allocated to a specific cylinder.

5.7.7 Fast Initialisation of Camshaft Position
Adjustment of the camshaft phase pick-up disc:
The camshaft phase pick-up disc (1) is on a floating fastening on the camshaft sprocket. It is adjusted using Special Service Tool KM-954 (2). The engine must first be set to 1st cylinder TDC using Special Service Tools KM-952 and KM-953 (see section 5.4.4 ).
Important: To loosen the fastening bolt, the camshaft sprocket must be counterheld at the camshaft hex with a suitable wrench.
Now install Adjustment Gauge KM-954 and align the camshaft phase pick-up disc to the gauge. Tighten the fastening bolt to the specified torque while counterholding the hex of the camshaft at the same time.
To check the adjustment, turn the engine a further 720 degrees in the rotational direction and install all 3 special service tools at 1st cylinder TDC. If this is not possible, adjustment must be repeated.
