Note:
The terms information sensor and cause of fault in the trouble code table provide only one indication to the cause of the fault, i.e. when a trouble code is indicated, the component indicated in the trouble code table must not necessarily be defective. Connecting leads, plug connections and the voltage supply must also be included in the trouble-shooting.
Blink Code Readout for Trouble Codes without TECH
It is also possible to read out trouble codes from the control unit data stream using Diagnostic Switch KM-640.
For this, the diagnostic switch is turned to position "B" and connected to the diagnostic plug.
When the ignition is switched on, the trouble codes will be flashed out via the engine telltale.

Engine Telltale
If TECH 1 is connected to the diagnostic plug, the engine telltale is activated to indicate that the system is in the diagnostic mode. If, however, Diagnostic Switch KM-640 is used, the engine telltale is the determining factor for blink code readout.
If the engine telltale is activated while travelling, a fault has been recognized and stored.
The system's emergency program guarantees that the vehicle, if driven carefully, will reach the next Service workshop.
Diagnosis with TECH 1
If communication between the Multec control unit and TECH 1 via the diagnostic plug has been enabled, a series of diagnosis and trouble-shooting options for trouble code readout and data list parameter comparison are available.
In addition, various system components can be activated with the Actuator Test and checked for correct functioning:
- Quad driver test
DIS
- Injection valves
- Idle speed stepper motor
- AC relay
- Fuel pump relay
| System Components | Procedure and Test Condition |
|---|---|
| Quad driver | The two outputs are checked separately |
| DIS module | EST A and EST B are checked individually. |
The checking spark plugs are actuated at 2 Hz
for approx. 30 s.
| Injection valve | The injection nozzles are actuated ten times per 1.5 ms. |
|---|---|
| Idle speed stepper motor | The idle speed stepper motor is activated and transports the valve taper in and out by 160 steps in each case. |
| AC relay | The AC relay is switched on and off at 1 Hz for approx. 30 s by the control unit via TECH 1 |
| Fuel pump relay | The fuel pump relay is switched on and off by the control unit via TECH 1 once per second. |
Snapshot
To be able to find the cause of temporarily occurring faults, the snapshot mode is available on TECH 1.
The data determined can be entered in the table on the next page for simplified snapshot evaluation.
The following procedure should be followed:
- The TECH 1 setting (setup) for receiving snapshots must be fulfilled.
- The vehicle is tested at idle speed or during a test drive.
- Start data recording, either automatically when a fault code occurs or manually by pressing key "F9" when the fault occurs.
- Continue until the end of snapshot recording.
- Then identify the "0 position", or time at which the fault starts.
- Enter the values around the selected time in the table.
- This easy-to-understand form allows simplified interpretation of the data.
This makes clear the relationship between cause and effect.

Quad Driver Test
Memory capacity means that only limited amounts of information are available for the snapshot block. This means that an isolated fault can be displayed, but that several faults in the two quad driver outputs (quad output amplifiers) must always be indicated by trouble code 93. In this case, the mechanic must check all outputs individually to identify the faulty circuit.
For C 14 SE and trouble code 93 "quad driver", two circuits/components may be defective:
1. Engine telltale
2. AC relay
Quad driver faults:
1. Engine telltale, short circuit to ground or lead interrupted
1. Engine telltale, short circuit to battery voltage
2. AC relay, short circuit to ground or lead interrupted
2. AC relay, short circuit to battery voltage
For further trouble-shooting, a TECH 1 Actuator Test "Quad Driver Module" can be selected. After completion of this test, TECH 1 displays the detected faults.
Important:
These trouble codes do not appear in TECH 1 mode F2!
