Multec-S C 16 XE
General
The new C 16 XE engine management systems contain several new components to ensure optimal fuel consumption and low emissions (as specified in ECN regulation).
- The Multec-S system has an electronic ignition timing system with knock sensor which allows it to use fuels of differing octane numbers without an octane number plug.
- For the first time, the engine load condition is determined by a hot-wire mass air flow meter (AFM).
- The new system checks and regulates ignition timing and the fuel injection amount.
- The C 16 XE engines use DIS (Direct Ignition System). In this new distributor-less system, the spark plugs are directly supplied with the required ignition energy from two ignition coils.
- The new controlled canister purge valve (CCP) in the evaporation control system allows purging of captured fuel vapour from the active carbon canister depending on the engine load.
- The fuel pump is not activated until the starter is engaged; if the ignition is only switched on, the fuel pump will not be switched on by the control unit. This modification was first introduced in MY '92 for all vehicles with Multec or Multec-S.
Start of production for the C 16 XE engine is in MY '93 1/2.
