(If nominal value is not attained)

· This value is not an actually measured value; it is an ignition value taken from the control unit. It is used primarily to improve understanding of the system. All consumers should be switched off.

· If the firing angle values read by TECH 1 deviate significantly from the above nominal values, check various sensor input signals:

1. Intake manifold pressure sensor

2. Throttle valve potentiometer

3. Intake air temperature

4. Coolant temperature

5. Selector lever in position "P" or "N" (AT)

6. Exhaust gas recirculation system

7. Controlled canister purge system

8. Knock control system

9. Ground connection, direct ignition system to intake manifold

· Ignition OFF

· Remove inductive pulse pick - up plug P 35

· Connect checking spark plugs to high voltage output 1 and 4

· Ignition ON

· Pulse control unit plug K 57 Ter. D 10 to battery +Ignition spark visible at spark plug· Lead interruption

from: control unit plug K 57 Ter. D 10

to: direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 3

· Short circuit to voltage

from: control unit plug K 57 Ter. D 10

to: direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 3

· Short circuit to ground

from: control unit plug K 57 Ter. D 10

to: direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 3

· Direct ignition system L 2 defective

· Connect checking spark plugs to high voltage output 2 and 3

· Pulse control unit plug K 57 Ter. C 3 to battery +Ignition spark visible at spark plug· Lead interruption

from: control unit plug K 57 Ter. C 3

to: direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 4

· Short circuit to voltage

from: control unit plug K 57 Ter. C 3

to: direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 4

· Short circuit to ground

· Direct ignition system L 2 defective

· Ignition OFF

· Disconnect direct ignition system wiring harness plug L 2

· Ignition ON

· Measure voltage:

from: direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 1

to: ground

greater than 11 V· Lead interruption

from: direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 1

to: ignition lock S 1 Ter. 15

· Short circuit to ground

from: direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 1

to: ignition lock S 1 Ter. 15

· Ignition lock S 1 defective

· Measure voltage:

from: direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 1

to: direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 2greater than 11 V· Lead interruption

from: direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 2

to: ground

· Short circuit in wiring harness

from: direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 2

to: battery +

· Connect direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 1 to battery +

· Connect direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 2 to ground

· Connect checking spark plugs to high voltage output 1 and 4

· Pulse direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 3 to battery +

Ignition spark visible at spark plug· Direct ignition system L 2 defective.

· Connect checking spark plugs to high voltage output 2 and 3

· Pulse direct ignition system L 2 Ter. 4 to battery +

Ignition spark visible at spark plug· Direct ignition system L 2 defective
