The "ENGINE SPEED " depends on different input signals and the control unit programming.

If the actual value does not lie within the nominal value, the other sensor signals must first be checked.

Trouble - shooting:Nominal Value:Cause of Fault:

(If nominal value is not attained)

· Check signal of the inductive pulse pick - up P 35:

· Ignition OFF

Disconnect control unit plug K 57 and plug from direct ignition module L 2· Short circuit in wiring harness

from: control unit plug Ter. A 13

to: battery +

· Measure voltage:

from: control unit plug Ter. A 13

to: ground

less than 0.1 V

· Measure voltage:

from: control unit plug Ter. A 14

to: ground

less than 0.1 V· Short circuit in wiring harness

from: control unit plug Ter. A 14

to: battery +

· Using Multimeter, measure resistance:

from: wiring harness plug P 35 Ter. 1

to: control unit plug Ter. A 14

less than 2 W· Lead interruption

from: wiring harness plug P 35 Ter. 1

to: control unit plug Ter. A 14

· Using Multimeter, measure resistance:

from: wiring harness plug P 35 Ter. 2

to: control unit plug Ter. A 13

less than 2 W· Lead interruption

from: wiring harness plug P 35 Ter. 2

to: control unit plug Ter. A 13

· Using Multimeter, measure resistance:

from: wiring harness plug P 35 Ter. 1 and 2

to: ground

greater than 100 kW· Short circuit in wiring harness

from: wiring harness plug P 35 Ter. 1 or 2

to: ground

· Using Multimeter, measure resistance:

from: wiring harness plug P 35 Ter. 3

to: ground

less than 2W· Lead interruption in shielding

· Connect plug from direct ignition module L 2

· Measure voltage:

from: wiring harness plug P 35 Ter. 3

to: ground

less than 0.1 V· Fault in circuit for direct ignition module L 2

· Select TECH 1 mode "F8", increase / decrease idle speed with arrow keys

Engine speed increases and decreases· Carry out test steps 05 and 08
· Further causes of fault:· Defective inductive pulse pick - up

· Burr on segment disc (58 - toothed disc)

· Incorrect distance between inductive pulse pick - up and segment disc

See Service materials

· Idle speed too high or irregular· Hot wire mass air flow meter supplies incorrect frequency - modulated signal

· Loose contact in throttle valve potentiometer

· Throttle valve shaft worn

· Throttle valve gap too large or too small

(change basic adjustment only in case of emergency, see test step 08)

· Fault in controlled canister purge system

· Engine takes in dead air

· Seat of idle speed adjuster dirty

· Spark plugs defective

· Mixture too lean or too rich (see test step 10)

· Battery voltage too high / low

· Odometer frequency sensor / instrument defective or circuit interrupted
