Remove

  1. 1. Remove cylinder head cover
  2. 2. Raise vehicle by its entire height
  3. 3. Detach lower engine compartment cover / splash protection
  4. 4. Set engine to TDC • Move torsional vibration damper to cylinder no.1 TDC (1) in direction of engine rotation
  1. 5. Lower vehicle by its entire height
  2. 6. The cams at the inlet side of cylinder no.2 (1) and the exhaust side of cylinder no.3 (2) are on top and also uniformly angled slightly inwards
  1. 7. Check valve clearance • Specified valve play – Inlet valves 0.21 - 0.29 mm (nominal value 0.25 mm) – Outlet valves 0.27 - 0.35 mm (nominal value 0.30 mm)
  2. 8. Check valves • Check 4x valve clearance with KM-6361 (1) – Note measurement result
  1. 9. Rotate crankshaft 180° in direction of engine rotation • Corresponds to 90° at the camshaft – Orient yourself to the marks on the camshaft sprockets • The cams at the inlet side of cylinder no.1 (1) and the exhaust side of cylinder no.4 (2) are on top and also uniformly angled slightly inwards

  2. 19. Move crankshaft to 60° (dimension I) before TDC
  1. 20. Lower vehicle by its entire height
  2. 21. Remove toothed belt • Mark direction of rotation • Tighten toothed belt tensioner (2) with Allen key (1) in direction of arrow and fix in position with KM-6333 (3) – Remove toothed belt
  1. 22. Detach exhaust camshaft sprocket • Attach KM-6347 (1) in combination with KM-956-1 (2) to camshaft sprocket – Undo 2x bolts (3) from KM-6347 – Insert KM-6347 into camshaft sprocket - ensure that it is correctly seated – Turn KM-6347 in direction of arrow – Tighten 2x bolt • Release bolt on camshaft sprocket (4). – Counterhold with KM-6347 – This requires a second person • Detach KM-6347 – Release 2x bolt • Remove camshaft sprocket bolt. – Remove camshaft sprocket

Note. Grooves of KM-6347 (arrows) must engage in camshaft sprocket

  1. 23. Detach intake camshaft sprocket • Fit KM-6347 in combination with KM-956-1 to camshaft sprocket – Undo 2x bolts from KM-6347 – Insert KM-6347 into camshaft sprocket - ensure that it is correctly seated – Turn KM-6347 in direction of arrow – Tighten 2x bolt • Release bolt on camshaft sprocket. – Counterhold with KM-6347 – This requires a second person • Detach KM-6347 – Release 2x bolt • Remove camshaft sprocket bolt. – Remove camshaft sprocket

Note. Grooves of KM-6347 must engage in camshaft sprocket

  1. 24. Undo outlet camshaft bearing cover • Gradually undo camshaft bearing cover, turning by 1/2 to 1 turn in a spiral from the outside to the inside
  1. 25. Remove exhaust camshaft • Remove camshaft bearing cover from cylinder head and remove camshaft

Note. Note marking of camshaft bearing cover with punched numbers from 1 to 0 (to avoid confusion, there is a dot at the bottom left before each number)

  1. 26. Undo inlet camshaft bearing cover • Gradually undo camshaft bearing cover, turning by 1/2 to 1 turn in a spiral from the outside to the inside
  1. 27. Remove intake camshaft • Remove camshaft bearing cover from cylinder head and remove camshaft

Note. Note marking of camshaft bearing cover with punched numbers from 1 to 0 (to avoid confusion, there is a dot at the bottom left before each number)

  1. 28. Remove valve lifters with KM-845 (1)

Install

  1. 29. Determine size of valve lifters Example of determining size of a valve lifter at the inlet side: Size of installed valve lifter 3.20 mm (Identification number 20) Measured value between cam and valve lifter + 0.31 mm = 3.51 mm Inlet side valve clearance nominal value - 0.25 mm Nominal size of new valve lifter 3.265 mm (Identification number 27x) • A valve lifter with this size is used, or one which is closest to this size

Note. The number (arrow) is on the inside of the valve lifter

  1. 30. Insert valve lifter with KM-845 • Coat sliding surfaces with oil
  2. 31. Install intake camshaft • Coat sliding surfaces with MoS 2 lubricating paste • Insert camshaft • Apply surface sealant to sealing surfaces of guide bearing (arrow) • Install camshaft bearing covers – Tighten camshaft bearing cover in a spiral from the inside to the outside 8 Nm

Note. Note markings of camshaft bearing covers

  1. 32. Install exhaust camshaft • Coat sliding surfaces with MoS 2 lubricating paste • Insert camshaft • Apply surface sealant to sealing surfaces of guide bearing (arrow) • Install camshaft bearing covers – Tighten camshaft bearing cover in a spiral from the inside to the outside 8 Nm

Note. Note markings of camshaft bearing covers

  1. 33. Install outlet camshaft sealing ring • Press sealing ring into camshaft bearing cover using KM-422 (1) – Use bolt (2) and washer (3) of camshaft gear
  1. 34. Install inlet camshaft sealing ring • Push sealing ring into camshaft bearing cover with KM-422 – Use bolt and washer of camshaft gear
  2. 35. Attach KM-6347 to outlet camshaft sprocket • Put on camshaft sprocket - pay attention to mark • Fit camshaft sprocket bolt (4) – Do not tighten – Attach KM-6347 (1) in combination with KM-956-1 (2) to camshaft sprocket – Undo 2x bolts (3) from KM-6347 – Insert KM-6347 into camshaft sprocket - ensure that it is correctly seated – Turn KM-6347 in direction of arrow – Tighten 2x bolt

Note. Grooves of KM-6347 (arrows) must engage in camshaft sprocket

  1. 36. Tighten outlet camshaft sprocket 50 Nm + 60° + 15° • Counterhold with KM-6347 – This requires a second person • Detach KM-6347
  2. 37. Attach KM-6347 to inlet camshaft sprocket • Put on camshaft sprocket - pay attention to mark • Screw in camshaft sprocket bolt. – Do not tighten – Fit KM-6347 in combination with KM-956-1 to camshaft sprocket – Undo 2x bolts from KM-6347 – Insert KM-6347 into camshaft sprocket - ensure that it is correctly seated – Turn KM-6347 in direction of arrow – Tighten 2x bolt

Note. Grooves of KM-6347 must engage in camshaft sprocket

  1. 38. Tighten inlet camshaft sprocket 50 Nm + 60° + 15° • Counterhold with KM-6347 – This requires a second person • Detach KM-6347
  2. 39. Fix camshaft sprockets in position using KM-6340 • Position camshaft sprockets so that the marks (3) are facing each other • Attach KM-6340-Left (1) to inlet camshaft sprocket • Insert KM-6340-Right (2)
  1. 40. Raise vehicle by its entire height
  2. 41. Set engine to TDC • Move torsional vibration damper to cylinder no.1 TDC (1) in direction of engine rotation
  1. 42. Lower vehicle by its entire height
  2. 43. Install toothed belt • Position toothed belt – Place toothed belt onto outlet camshaft sprocket – Place toothed belt onto inlet camshaft sprocket – Tension toothed belt tensioner and remove KM-6333
  3. 44. Remove KM-6340
  4. 45. Raise vehicle by its entire height
  5. 46. Turn crankshaft 720° • 2 turns in direction of engine rotation • Move toothed belt drive wheel to cylinder no.1 TDC mark (1)
  1. 47. Fit lower engine compartment cover / splash protection
  2. 48. Lower vehicle by its entire height
  3. 49. Fix camshaft sprockets in position using KM-6340 • Insert KM-6340-Left (1) • Insert KM-6340-Right (2)

Note. Marks (3) on camshaft sprockets must align - otherwise remove toothed belt and refit

  1. 50. Remove KM-6340

Important. Ensure that it engages correctly

  1. 51. Attach front toothed belt cover (upper) • Tighten 2x bolt 6 Nm
  2. 52. Install cylinder head cover
