System Checking with TECH 1

Diagnosis must be performed in the following order. Deviations from this order can lead to incorrect diagnosis or loss of important diagnosis data.

· Note customer complaint

· Vehicle:

- Position vehicle on level ground

- Engage parking brake

- Vehicles with AT:

selector lever in "P"position

- Ignition OFF

· Visual check (inspection)

- Use customer complaints for visual inspection

- Check battery condition

Note: The battery must not be disconnected at this point, as the engine control unit would then lose its stored trouble codes.

- Check all fuses

- Check all plug connections and plugs for the engine system

Note: The wiring harness plug for the engine control unit must not be disconnected at this point, as the engine control unit would then lose its stored trouble codes.

- Check engine system wiring harness for damage

- Check ground connection for engine control unit and engine

Note: The wiring harness plug for the engine control unit must not be disconnected at this point, as the engine control unit would then lose its stored trouble codes.

· Connect TECH 1 and establish communication

Before connecting TECH 1, observe the instructions in the Operating Instructions.

- Ignition OFF

- Connect TECH 1 to the diagnostic plug with the relevant program module and the required adapters

Note: In the Omega-B, a new 16-pin diagnostic plug is used. In contrast to the previous diagnostic plug, it has 4 data leads and is installed in the passenger compartment in the console under the steering wheel (1). For easier access, remove the cover (2).

Note: TECH 1 now establishes communication with the engine control unit. If this is not possible, the following display appears:

In this case, carry out trouble-shooting as specified in section 5.4 "Table 1, Diagnostic Plug XD and Voltage Supply, Check".

If TECH 1 does not function at all (no display or does not make sense), likewise perform trouble-shooting as specified in section 5.4.

Note: If the engine control unit part number in TECH 1 does not match the information in section 5.6 "Table 3, Control Unit Coding Table", make a note of any trouble codes that are displayed and then install a correct control unit.

· TECH 1 trouble codes:

- If there are one or more trouble codes stored in the engine control unit, they will now be displayed by TECH 1. Make a note of the trouble codes, and also any information about the type of trouble code (intermittent, present, not present).

- If a "PRESENT" type trouble code is stored, carry out trouble-shooting as specified in section 5.5, "Table 2, Digital Diesel Electronics DDE 2.1 F2:TROUBLE CODE TABLE" and by the information in the "DATA LIST NO." column. Observe the instructions at the beginning of section 5.2 "Digital Diesel Electronics DDE 2.1 F0:DATA LIST".

· TECH 1 quick check F0:DATA LIST:

- Carry out TECH 1 quick check from section 5.2, "Digital Diesel Electronics DDE 2.1 F0:DATA LIST". Observe the instructions at the beginning of this section.

· TECH 1 actuator tests:

- Carry out TECH 1 actuator tests from section 5.8, "Table 5, DDE 2.1 Quick Check F5:ACTUATOR TEST". Observe the instructions at the beginning of this section.

· Test drive:

- Carry out a test drive, with the vehicle operating at various speeds and load conditions. During the test drive, also take note of any mechanical faults, as listed in section 5.10 "Table 8, Trouble-shooting Chart".

· Intermittent:

If all the above tests have been successfully completed and diagnosis did not indicate a fault, but the customer complaint referred to the engine, note the following instructions on locating intermittent faults:

- If neither a "INTERMITTENT" nor a "NOT PRESENT" trouble code type was noted at the start of TECH 1 diagnosis, now determine the affected circuit as specified in section 5.5 "Table 2, Digital Diesel Electronics DDE 2.1 F2:TROUBLE CODE TABLE" and then move the plugs, wiring harness and individual components of the affected circuit with the ignition ON and the engine running at idle speed in such a way that the control unit may be able to recognize a "PRESENT" type trouble code. In addition, observe the trouble-shooting instructions referred to by the "DATA LIST NO." column of the trouble-shooting table.

· Final check:

If all of the checks listed in section 5.1.1 have been carried out by this time of the diagnosis and no malfunction has been diagnosed, the engine is okay. Despite this, the following checks should still be performed:

- Inspect engine for damage, leaks, etc.

- Carry out TECH 1 actuator tests (section 5.8)

- Carry out TECH 1 quick check (section 5.2)

- Read trouble codes (section 5.5)

- Perform test drive, and drive at various speeds and load conditions. Take note of any unusual noises and other disturbances (section 5.10)

- Read trouble codes (section 5.5)
