How to Adjust the Timing Opel Astra H

DOHC Petrol Engine 7 illustrations ~454 words

Note. Adjustment is carried out with the engine cold – at room temperature.

Remove

  1. 1. Remove ribbed V-belt
  2. 2. Remove 2x bolts (1) and remove top front toothed belt cover from rear toothed belt cover
  1. 3. Remove lower engine splash guard
  2. 4. Tension ribbed V-belt tensioner (clockwise) • Lock using suitable drift
  3. 5. Remove fastening bolts (1) and remove ribbed V-belt tensioner from compressor support
  1. 6. Remove torsional vibration damper • Counterhold at toothed belt drive gear fastening bolt
  2. 7. Remove 2 bolts (1) • Detach lower section of toothed belt cover from rear toothed belt cover
  1. 8. Undo toothed belt tension roller fastening bolt
  2. 9. Rotate eccentric adjuster in direction of arrow (clockwise)

Note. Pointer (1) must be positioned just before left stop

  1. 10. Mark toothed belt direction of rotation

Important. Proceed carefully when turning crankshaft. Improper adjustment leads to contact and therefore damage to components, e.g. valves on pistons.

  1. 11. Remove toothed belt from camshaft sprockets
  1. 12. Release fixing bolts (3) from KM-6347 (1)
  2. 13. Insert KM-6347 into camshaft sprocket in conjunction with KM-956-1 (2) • Ensure correct fitting

Note. The grooves of KM-6347 (arrows) must engage with camshaft timing gear

  1. 14. Turn KM-6347 in direction of arrow and tighten fixing bolts
  1. 15. Move camshaft sprockets (short distance) to mark • Mark (1) on cylinder head cover aligns with notches on camshaft sprockets
  2. 16. Fix camshaft sprockets in position with KM-853 (3)

Note. Pay attention to timing mark - marks (2) must align with each other

  1. 17. Position toothed belt

Note. Ensure that tension side (I) is taut.

  1. 18. Release fastening bolt for toothed belt tension roller (I)
  2. 19. Tension toothed belt tension roller at eccentric adjuster in direction of arrow • Anticlockwise

Note. Pointer of toothed belt tension roller must be positioned just before the right stop (I)

  1. 20. Tighten toothed belt tension roller fastening bolt
  2. 21. Remove locking tool KM-853 .
  3. 22. Move crankshaft by two turns (720°) in direction of engine rotation to "Cylinder no.1 TDC" mark (III) • Rotate at toothed belt drive gear fastening bolt

Note. Turn crankshaft slowly and smoothly

  1. 23. Notches on camshaft sprockets must align with marks on cylinder head cover (II)
  2. 24. Lock camshaft sprockets in position with KM-853

Install

  1. 25. Attach lower section of toothed belt cover to rear toothed belt cover 6 Nm
  2. 26. Attach torsional vibration damper to toothed belt drive gear 20 Nm • Counterhold at toothed belt drive gear fastening bolt
  3. 27. Attach ribbed V-belt tensioner to compressor support 25 Nm
  4. 28. Tension ribbed V-belt tensioner (clockwise) and remove detent
  5. 29. Install lower engine splash guard
  6. 30. Attach top front toothed belt cover to rear toothed belt cover 6Nm
  7. 31. Install ribbed V-belt
