Field Remedy: 1052

Subject:Engine - Poor cold start
Models:Engines:Option:
Frontera 1992...19954JB1T4JB1-TC
Complaint:Poor cold start.
Cause:Incorrect parts fitted to engine (affected cars are from VIN SV720103).
Production:As of VIN SV723580 correct parts have been fitted in production.

Remedy:

Complete the three instructions in sequence,in order to achieve an improved cold start performance.

1. Check coolant temperature switch:

The coolant temperature switch is mounted on the thermostat housing at the front of the engine (U9039). On some vehicles there is a possibility that an incorrect temperature switch has been installed. The temperature switch should be checked if it has a white top with a red dot. If the top of the switch has a pink colour then it should be replaced. Cat./Part-No. 13 38 513/(94 457 511).

2. Check glow plugs:

On some vehicles there is a possibility that incorrect glow plugs have been installed (23 Volt instead of a 11 Volt glow plug). Correct plugs can be identified by a golden colour. If the glow plugs are silver coloured then the glow plugs should be replaced. Cat./Part-No. 12 14 323/(94 133 759).

3. New cold starting procedure: Note: First it has to be determined that the cold start idle speed is not too low, before the new starting procedure is applied.

If the replacement of parts described in the preceding instructions together with the starting operation outlined in the Owner's Manual do not lead to an improved cold start, the the instructions mentioned below should be observed.

Apply handbrake and place the transmission in neutral. Turn the ignition key clockwise to ON. Ensure that all the warning and system indicator lights are illuminated on the instrument panel.

Switch on the quick warming-up system (Q.W.S.) and ensure that the yellow indicator light in the switch button lights up.

With the ignition switched on and all the instrument panel indicator lights illuminated wait until both the glow plug indicator light has estinguished and the voltmeter indicates that the glow plug circuit has switched off. This is accompanied by an audible click from a relay installed behind the instrument panel (Total elapsed time for this period is 20 seconds). Fully depress both the clutch and accelerator pedals and turn the key to START.

Crank the engine until ignition has occured

Release the key as soon as the engine starts.

Balance the engine speed using the accelerator pedal to achieve a steady idle speed.

Release both clutch and accelerator pedals once a steady idle speed has been achieved.

Note: Do not keep the starter engaged for more than 30 seconds at a time. If the starter is operated repeatedly but, the engine does not start, check both fuel and electrical systems. During repeated start attempts it is absolutely necessary to have brief periods of recovery time (about 30 seconds) for conserving the battery.
