Piston Rings Remove and Install Opel Campo I

Diesel Engine 6 illustrations ~208 words

Remove

Piston with con-rod - see operation "Piston with Con-rod Remove and Install".

Piston rings from piston - use commercially available piston ring clamp pliers.

Clean

Piston ring grooves - use ground piece of old piston ring.

Measure

Piston ring gap at a position where cylinder bore diameter is smallest.

If ring gap exceeds 1.5 mm replace piston ring.

For piston ring sizes permissible piston ring gaps – see 'Technical Data'.

Measure

Clearance between piston ring grooves and rings.

If clearance exceeds 0.15 mm replace piston ring – see also 'Technical Data'.

Install

Oil ring (1) with expander ring to piston – install expander coil into oil ring so there is no gap on either end of the coil.

Compression rings (2 and 3) to piston – stamped side to face up; on 4JG2T engine:

  • 2nd compression ring (2) with 2N mark facing up.
  • 1st compression ring (3) with 1N mark facing up.

Apply clean engine oil to circumference of piston rings.

Inspect

Rings for smooth rotation.

Adjust

Ring gap positions as shown:

  • Oil ring (1).
  • 2nd compression ring (2).
  • 1st compression ring (3).

Mark on piston (arrowed) must face front of engine. Illustration shows 4JA1T piston.

Install

Piston with con-rod to engine.
