Z 22 SE DOHC Engine

The completely newly developed Z 22 SE DOHC engine is the first representative of the new generation of ECOTEC engines. The main components of the powerful and refined 2.2 litre four–valve engine are for the first time made of an aluminium alloy. The Z 22 SE DOHC engine will be available as of Model Year 2000 3/4.

The most important features at a glance are:

  • DOHC four–cylinder 16V in–line engine
  • Cylinder head produced from aluminium alloy
  • Valve actuated via two camshafts and low–friction roller cam follower (supported by needle bearings) with hydraulic clearance compensation.
  • Maintenance–free hydraulic valve lifters
  • Cylinder block produced from aluminium alloy and fitted with dry cylinder liners
  • Internal ventilation for crankcase
  • Balancer shafts with cast iron counterbalance weights
  • Internal water pump
  • Engine timing with maintenance–free timing chains
  • Exemplary noise– and vibration level
  • Low tare weight (138 kilograms) due to use of light metals and modern design.
