The Vectra-B features the C 22 SEL DOHC engine for the first time. The C 22 SEL is based on the C 20 SEL.
The main differences between the C 22 SEL and the C 20 SEL are:
- increased displacement
- differential with balancer shafts
5.1.1 General
The technical features of the C 22 SEL include:
- 4 valves per cylinder
- distributorless ignition system
- SIMTEC 56.5 engine management system
- knock control
- differential with balancer shafts

Engine Identification
The engine identification is located on the cylinder block surface adjoining the transmission flange.
Differential/balancer Shafts
For significant improvement of the C 22 SEL DOHC petrol engine smooth running characteristics, a differential is featured with balancer shafts.
The purpose of the differential is to considerably reduce forces, including torque, stemming from vibrating piston and con-rod masses impacting the engine bearing in conventional designs.
The differential is positioned in the oil pan area beneath cylinders 2 and 3. A housing is integrated in the bearing bridge for mounting both balancer shafts.
A shrunk-fit gear on the 3rd crank web has a 1:2 ratio to drive the gear for the 1st balancer shaft, which rotates opposite the engine rotational direction at twice the crankshaft speed.
The gear for the 2nd balancer shaft is axially aligned with the 1st and rotates in the opposite direction.
