Timing Chains
The camshafts, balancer shafts and coolant pump are driven via two timing chains. The crankshaft drives the two camshafts via one timing chain and the balancer shafts and coolant pump via a second timing chain. Two hydraulic, maintenance–free chain tensioners ensure correct chain tension.
The timing chains are guided through two centrally mounted tension rails plus guide rails fastened to the tension side of the timing case. A sliding rail guides the timing chain between the camshaft pulleys. The oil spray nozzle attached in the centre ensures that the chains are well lubricated. Specific lubrication of the timing chains is supported by the oil returning from the front of the cylinder head.

Adjustment of timing
The timing is adjusted at 4th cylinder TDC. The TDC benchmarks on the timing chains are indicated with coloured chain links. These must correspond to the markings on the sprockets.
Checking the timing
The timing is also checked at 4th cylinder TDC. The camshaft pulleys must be fixed in position using KM–6148. In this position, the TDC marks on the torsional vibration damper and timing case must align - see Illustration L 4095, item 2.
