Chain Tensioner

The two hydraulic chain tensioners are located in the cylinder head (camshaft timing chain) or timing case (balancer shaft timing chain).

Tensioner for balancer shaft timing chain: Rotate piston through 90°, push back and lock in this position with KM–6077.

Tensioner for camshaft timing chain: Remove chain tensioner. Before installing the tensioner for the camshaft timing chain, the inner piston must be pushed against spring pressure and locked on the last notch in the piston by turning to the right. The lock is automatically released after the engine is started.

The two integrated balancer shafts with cast iron counterbalance weights guarantee exemplary noise and vibration characteristics. They are located level with the crank drive and are driven by the balancer shaft timing chain. The teeth of the balancer shaft sprocket are fitted with damping rings which further reduce noise emissions from the chain. The coolant pump drive forms part of this chain drive.

The balancer shafts rotate in opposite directions at twice crankshaft speed, thus ensuring the engine runs smoothly.
