Timing, Adjust Adjustment Is Carried Out with the Engine Cold - at Room Temperature.
Disconnect ground cable from battery.
Remove side engine compartment cover.
Remove lower part of toothed belt cover - see operation "Toothed Belt Cover - Lower Part, Remove and Install".
Screw fastening bolt from toothed belt drive gear in crankshaft.
Release fastening bolt of toothed belt tension roller and turn at adjuster eccentric in direction of arrow (clockwise) until pointer (1) is just in front of the left stop.
Remove toothed belt from camshaft pulleys.
Proceed carefully when turning the crankshaft. Incorrect adjustment can lead to contact and thereby damage components such as valves at piston and intake valves at exhaust valves.
Set crankshaft (III) or camshafts (I) (quicker method) to mark.
The marks on the camshaft sprockets must face one another and align with the upper edge of the cylinder head. Lock camshaft pulleys with KM-852 (II). Turn crankshaft slowly and uniformly.
For X 16 XEL, Y 16 XE, Z 16 XE: Check installation position of coolant pump (IV) - adjust if necessary. Mark (1) on coolant pump must be aligned with mark (2) on cylinder block.
Install toothed belt - ensure that tensioned side (I) is taut.
Observe timing marks.
Adjust toothed belt tension - see operation "Toothed Belt Tension, Adjust".
Install lower part of toothed belt cover - see operation "Toothed Belt Cover - Lower Part, Remove and Install".
Install side engine compartment cover.
Connect ground cable to battery.
