Install
- 1. Insert 10 crankshaft bearing shells • Note markings and order • Note position of axial bearing • In cylinder block, crankshaft bearing cap
- 2. Insert crankshaft • In cylinder block • Insert 2 thrust rings
Note. Oil grooves face outward
- 3. Attach 5 crankshaft bearing caps • Note markings, order and tightening sequence. Arrows point to engine timing side • Tighten 10x bolts 88,2 Nm
Note. It is not necessary to replace the bolts when aligning the crankshaft
- 4. Attach MKM-571-B • Install MKM-571-B in bracket • Attach bracket to cylinder block on transmission side
Measure
- 5. Adjust MKM-571-B • Attach probe to crankshaft flange • Fit MKM-571-B under tension • Set MKM-571-B to "0"
- 6. Measure crankshaft end clearance • Move crankshaft • Read off test value
Note. Repeat measurement several times. Permissible crankshaft end clearance - see "Technical Data - Crank drive, cylinder block"
- 7. Detach MKM-571-B
- 8. Detach 5 crankshaft bearing caps • Slacken in order illustrated • Unscrew 10x bolt
- 9. Attach MKM-571-B • Attach with bracket to cylinder block
- 10. Adjust MKM-571-B • Place probe against crankshaft bearing journal • Fit MKM-571-B under tension • Set MKM-571-B to "0"
- 11. Measure crankshaft out-of-round • Turn crankshaft evenly • Read off test value
Note. Permissible crankshaft out-of-round - see "Technical Data - Crank drive, cylinder block"
- 12. Detach MKM-571-B
- 13. Remove crankshaft • Remove 2 thrust rings
- 14. 5x measure crankshaft bearing journal diameter • Measure at 2 points (I + II) per bearing using micrometer
Note. Note measurements - if a measurement lies outside of permissible limits, the crankshaft must be ground or replaced
- 15. Attach 5 crankshaft bearing caps • Note markings and order. Arrows point to engine timing side • Tighten 10x bolts 88,2 Nm
Note. It is not necessary to replace the bolts when aligning the crankshaft
- 16. Fit internal measuring device • Install appropriate tip in internal measuring device – Install MKM-571-B in internal measuring device with approx. 1 mm of pre-tension • Slide internal measuring device between test surfaces of micrometer gauge • Determine indicator turning point – Suspend internal measuring device between test surfaces – Set MKM-571-B to "0" at turning point
- 17. 10x measure crankshaft bearing bore diameter • Determine turning point at 2 points (I + II) per bearing – Suspend internal measuring device in crankshaft bearing bore hole • Note measurements
- 18. 5x calculate crankshaft bearing clearance • Bear in mind the following when selecting main bearing shells: Main bearing shells are divided into three classes. The class depends on the bore diameter for the main bearing shells in the cylinder block and is identified by a number per main bearing shell in the cylinder block, see F4489 above. The inner diameter of the main bearing shells depends on the outer diameter of the main bearing journals. Depending on the diameter, the crankshaft cheeks are marked with "--" or "-- --". The numbers (1 to 5) relate to the respective main bearing journals. The (1) relates to the left-hand main bearing journals shown at the bottom of figure F4489, and the others relate to the right-hand main bearing journals. Bearing shells with appropriate play can be selected using these identifiers - see "Technical Data".
Note. Crankshaft bearing clearance is calculated on the basis of the difference between the crankshaft bearing bore and crankshaft bearing journal diameters. Permissible crankshaft bearing clearance - see "Technical Data - Crank drive, cylinder block"
- 19. Detach 5 crankshaft bearing caps • Unscrew 10x bolt
- 20. 10x remove crankshaft bearing shell
- 21. 4x measure con-rod bearing journal diameter • Measure at 2 points (I + II) using micrometer
Note. Note measurements - if a measurement lies outside of permissible limits, the crankshaft must be ground or replaced
- 22. Insert 8x con-rod bearing shell • Note markings and order • In con-rod, con-rod bearing cap
- 23. Attach 4 con-rod bearing caps • Note markings (arrows) and order • Tighten 8x nuts 24,5 Nm + 100°+ 15°
Note. It is not necessary to replace the nuts when measuring con-rod bearing clearance
- 24. Transfer internal measuring device • Remove probe tip • Install appropriate tip in internal measuring device – Install MKM-571-B in internal measuring device with approx. 1 mm of pre-tension • Slide internal measuring device between test surfaces of micrometer gauge • Determine indicator turning point – Suspend internal measuring device between test surfaces – Set MKM-571-B to "0" at turning point
- 25. 4x measure con-rod bearing bore diameter • Determine turning point at 2 points (I + II) – Oscillate internal probe in con-rod bearing bore • Note measurements
- 26. 4x calculate con-rod bearing clearance
Note. The con-rod bearing play is calculated from the different dimensions of the con-rod bearing bore and journal. Permitted con-rod bearing play
Remove
- 27. Detach 4 con-rod bearing caps • Unscrew 8 nuts
- 28. Remove 8x con-rod bearing shell
- 29. Remove internal measuring device
