DTC P0463-A: FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT VOLTS TOO HIGH Chrysler LHS II

Note. For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.

  1. Refer to appropriate BODY CONTROL COMPUTER TESTS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT for fuel level accuracy testing.
  2. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If GLOBAL GOOD TRIP displayed is equal to zero, go to step 6 . If GLOBAL GOOD TRIP displayed is not equal to zero, go to next step.
  3. Using scan tool, monitor fuel level sense signal voltage. While observing voltage, wiggle wiring harness for fuel level sending unit. If voltage changed, repair wiring harness as necessary where wiggling caused problem to appear. Perform «TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION»(ref-576-S22124556262000030800000) . If voltage did not change, go to next step.
  4. Condition to set trouble code is not present at this time. FUEL LEVEL SENDING UNIT VOLTS TOO HIGH DTC sets if Body Control Module (BCM) terminal No. 7 voltage is more than 4.8 volts. Possible causes are: open fuel level sensor signal circuit, failed fuel level sending unit, faulty connections, faulty wiring or BCM failure. Go to next step.
  5. Inspect all related wiring and connectors and repair as necessary. If no problems were found with wiring and connectors, see «INACTIVE TROUBLE CODE CONDITION»(ref-576-S27765318282000030800000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTICS. If related wiring and connectors were repaired, perform «TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION»(ref-576-S22124556262000030800000) .
  6. Access fuel pump module jumper harness electrical connector located under rear seat on passenger side. Disconnect fuel pump module jumper harness electrical connector. Jumper harness is located between fuel pump module located inside fuel tank and vehicle harness located under rear seat on passenger side.
  7. Connect a jumper wire between fuel level signal circuit on fuel pump module jumper harness electrical connector (BCM side) terminal No. 2 (Dark Blue wire) and fuel pump ground terminal No. 8 (Black wire). Using scan tool, read fuel level sending unit voltage. If voltage is one volt or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than one volt, go to step 10 .
  8. Turn ignition off. Remove jumper wire. Using a DVOM, check resistance of fuel pump ground circuit between fuel pump jumper harness electrical connector (BCM side) terminal No. 8 and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair faulty fuel pump ground circuit at fuel pump jumper harness as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION»(ref-576-S22124556262000030800000) .
  9. Disconnect BCM Blue connector. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of fuel level sensor signal circuit (Dark Blue wire) between fuel pump module jumper harness electrical connector (BCM side) and BCM Blue connector terminal No. 7. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace BCM. Perform «TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION»(ref-576-S22124556262000030800000) . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open fuel level sensor signal circuit. Perform «TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION»(ref-576-S22124556262000030800000) .
  10. Reconnect fuel pump module jumper harness electrical connector. Remove fuel tank from vehicle. Disconnect fuel pump module connector located directly on top of fuel tank. Connect a jumper wire between fuel pump module jumper harness electrical connector (BCM side) fuel level signal circuit (Dark Blue wire) and sensor ground (Black wire). Go to next step.
  11. Using scan tool, read fuel level sending unit voltage. If voltage is one volt or more, repair open circuit in fuel level sensor signal circuit (Dark Blue wire). Perform «TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION»(ref-576-S22124556262000030800000) . If voltage is less than one volt, repair open sensor ground circuit in jumper harness. Perform «TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST VERIFICATION»(ref-576-S22124556262000030800000) .
