Scheme 53
- Turn ignition off, then turn ignition on. Attempt to start engine. Using scan tool, read Camshaft Position (CMP) signal state and Crankshaft Position (CKP) signal state while attempting to start engine. Go to next step.
- If either signal state did not change, go to next step. If only CMP signal state changed, go to step 7. If only CKP signal state changed, go to «DTC P0340-A: NO CAM SIGNAL AT PCM»(ref-576-S09640644212000030800000)
- If engine is not started, start engine. Wiggle wiring harness between CMP sensor and CKP sensor to Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If engine misses or stalls, repair wiring harness as necessary where wiggling caused problem to appear. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000). If engine did not miss or stall, go to next step.
- Using lab scope in scan tool, check CKP sensor connector signal circuit. See «CKP SENSOR CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION»(ref-576-S25677718092000030800000) table. With engine running, wiggle wiring harness between CKP sensor and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If irregularities are present in lab scope pattern, check harness and connectors for damage. If harness and connectors are okay, replace CKP sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000). If irregularities are not present in lab scope pattern, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Using lab scope in scan tool, check CMP sensor connector signal circuit. See «CMP SENSOR CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION»(ref-576-S02254438952000030800000) table. DO NOT start engine. With engine off, observe lab scope pattern for any pulses generated by CMP sensor. If CMP sensor generates any pulses, replace CMP sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000). If CMP sensor does not generate any pulses, go to next step.
- See «INACTIVE TROUBLE CODE CONDITION»(ref-576-S27765318282000030800000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTICS. Test is complete. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000). Test is complete.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect CKP sensor connector. (Scheme 53) Turn ignition on. Using a voltmeter, check voltage of CKP sensor connector 5-volt to 8-volt supply circuit at CKP sensor connector. See «CKP SENSOR CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION»(ref-576-S25677718092000030800000) table. If voltage is more than 7 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 7 volts or less, go to «DTC P0320-B: NO CRANK REFERENCE SIGNAL AT PCM»(ref-576-S06064670842000030800000)
- Turn ignition off. Connect one end of a jumper wire to CKP sensor connector (harness side) signal circuit. See «CKP SENSOR CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION»(ref-576-S25677718092000030800000) table. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, monitor CKP sensor state. While observing scan tool display, tap other end of jumper wire to CKP sensor connector (harness side) ground circuit several times. If CKP sensor state did not change to present, go to next step. If CKP sensor state changed to present, go to «DTC P0320-C: NO CRANK REFERENCE SIGNAL AT PCM»(ref-576-S31201687352000030800000)
- Turn ignition off. Remove jumper wire. Using a 12-volt test light, connect one end of test light to a 12-volt source. Connect other end of test light to CKP sensor connector (harness side) ground circuit. See «CKP SENSOR CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION»(ref-576-S25677718092000030800000) table. If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, repair open CKP sensor ground circuit. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000).
- Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of CKP sensor signal circuit between CKP sensor connector (harness side) and PCM connector terminal No. 32. See «CKP SENSOR CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION»(ref-576-S25677718092000030800000) table and «PCM WIRE CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION»(ref-576-S04477075742000030800000) table. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit or high resistance on CKP sensor signal circuit. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000).
- Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of CKP sensor signal circuit between CKP sensor connector (harness side) and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in CKP sensor signal circuit. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of CKP sensor signal circuit between CKP sensor connector (harness side) and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in CKP sensor signal circuit. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, check all power and ground circuits at PCM. Repair as necessary. If PCM power and ground circuits are okay, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000).
