- Using scan tool, read Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If scan tool display GLOBAL GOOD TRIP is equal to zero, go to step 4 . If scan tool display GLOBAL GOOD TRIP is not equal to zero, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, read FREEZE FRAME data. Ensure hex code matches DTC on scan tool. Hex code should be D5. If DTC matches hex code on scan tool, go to next step. If DTC does not match hex code on scan tool, repair DTC using FREEZE FRAME data. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000) .
- Read FREEZE FRAME data on scan tool. Try to duplicate conditions identified on scan tool. Pay particular attention to code set conditions: engine RPM, coolant temperature and engine load. Using scan tool, observe GLOBAL GOOD TRIP counter. If GLOBAL GOOD TRIP counter changed to zero, go to next step. If GLOBAL GOOD TRIP counter does not change to zero, go to «DTC P0406-B: EGR POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE TOO HIGH»(ref-576-S36021800052000030800000)
- Disconnect EGR solenoid electrical connector. Using a voltmeter, check voltage of EGR sensor signal circuit at EGR solenoid connector. See «EGR SOLENOID CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION»(ref-576-S00224399332000030800000) table. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to next step. If voltage is more than 10 volts, repair short to voltage on EGR sensor signal circuit. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000) .
- Connect a jumper wire between EGR sensor signal circuit and sensor ground at EGR solenoid connector. See «EGR SOLENOID CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION»(ref-576-S00224399332000030800000) table. Using scan tool, read EGR position sensor voltage. If voltage is one volt or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than one volt, replace EGR solenoid assembly. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000) .
- Move jumper wire from EGR solenoid connector sensor ground circuit to chassis ground. Using scan tool, read EGR position sensor voltage. If voltage is one volt or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than one volt, repair open EGR sensor ground circuit. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000) .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Using a DVOM, check resistance of 5-volt supply circuit between EGR solenoid connector and PCM connector terminal No. 61. See «EGR SOLENOID CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION»(ref-576-S00224399332000030800000) table and «PCM CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION»(ref-576-S41930812562000030800000) table. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair EGR sensor signal circuit for a short to 5-volt supply circuit. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000) .
- Using a DVOM, check resistance of EGR sensor signal circuit between EGR solenoid connector and PCM connector terminal No. 34. See «EGR SOLENOID CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION»(ref-576-S00224399332000030800000) table and «PCM CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION»(ref-576-S41930812562000030800000) table. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open EGR sensor signal circuit. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000) . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5A: ROAD TEST FOR OBD-II TROUBLE CODES»(ref-576-S06971814902000030800000) .
