Check and Adjust Valve Play Opel Astra H

Remove

1. 1. Open bonnet
2. 2. Raise vehicle by its full height
3. 3. Detach the lower engine cover and right engine splash guard
4. 4. Lower vehicle by its full height
5. 5. Detach engine cover
6. 6. Detach vacuum line • Detach 2x vacuum hose from vacuum line • Unscrew 2x bolts (arrows)

7. 7. Detach 2x hose (1) from cylinder housing cover • Undo 2 clamps

8. 8. Remove cylinder head cover • Unscrew 7x bolt (arrows) in a spiral from the outside inward

Adjust

9. 9. Turn the crankshaft until the cam pair (1) faces up.

10. 10. Check valve play • With feeler gauge – Desired values: Intake valve 0.3 ± 0.05 mm / exhaust valve 0.35 ± 0.05 mm

Note. Valve play must be checked at room temperature when the engine is cold.

11. 11. Adjust valve play • Turn the bucket tappet until the tappet groove faces outwards • Press down bucket tappet with EN-46797 (1) • Insert EN-46799 (2) • Remove shim

Important. Make sure that the valves are not adjusted when the piston is at TDC. Otherwise, the valves could strike the piston head.

12. 12. Example for determination of shim thickness: 1. Thickness of installed shim 3.15 mm 2. Measurement between cams and cup tappets + 0.45 mm = 3.60 mm 3. Nominal valve play - 0.35 mm 4. Thickness of new shim = 3.25 mm
13. 13. Insert shim (1) • Coat new shim with engine oil and insert in bucket tappet with code facing down • Remove EN-46799

14. 14. Turn crankshaft • Turn in direction of engine rotation until cam pair (2) faces up – Check and adjust • Turn in direction of engine rotation until cam pair (3) faces up – Check and adjust • Turn in direction of engine rotation until cam pair (4) faces up – Check and adjust

Note. Valve play must be checked again on all adjusted valves

Remove

15. 15. Clean sealing surface
16. 16. Install cylinder head cover • Replace seal • Tighten 7x bolt in a spiral from the inside outward 10 Nm
17. 17. Attach 2x hose to cylinder head cover • Attach 2x clamps
18. 18. Install vacuum line • Tighten 2x bolt 9 Nm • Attach 2x vacuum hose to vacuum line
19. 19. Attach engine cover
20. 20. Raise vehicle by its full height
21. 21. Install lower engine cover and right engine splash guard
22. 22. Lower vehicle by its full height
23. 23. Close bonnet
