Sump, Removing and Installing Audi TT 8N

Cooling System (mechanical) 3 illustrations ~498 words

Special tools and equipment required

  1. Electric drill with plastic brush attachment
  2. Safety goggles
  3. Silicone sealant.

Removing

  1. Remove fasteners -1...3- and remove center sound insulation.
  1. Remove right sound insulation (arrows).
  2. Drain engine oil.
  3. Disconnect connector at Oil level thermal sensor -G266-.
  1. Remove bolts -1- and -2- and remove secondary air injection pump with bracket -A-.
  2. Unscrew sump/transmission bolts.
  3. Unscrew securing bolts for sump in diagonal sequence.
  4. Take off sump. If necessary, loosen sump by striking lightly with a rubber hammer.

Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse order. Note the following

Scheme 190

Scheme 190
  1. Carefully remove sealant residue form cylinder block.
CAUTIONWear safety goggles.
  1. Remove sealant residue from sump, e.g. with a rotating plastic brush or similar.
  2. Clean sealing surfaces.
  3. Cut off tube nozzle at front marking (nozzle approx. 3 mm diameter).

Scheme 191

Scheme 191
  1. Apply bead of silicone sealant onto clean sealing surface of sump as shown.
  1. Width of sealing bead: 2 mm

Note. The bead of sealant must not be thicker than specified, otherwise excess sealant can enter to sump and obstruct the strainer in the oil intake pipe. Use extra care when applying sealant bead in the area around the cover for the timing chains (arrows). The sump must be installed within 5 minutes after applying silicone sealant.

  1. Immediately install sump and tighten bolts in following sequence
  2. Tighten securing bolts for sump in diagonal sequence initially to 5 Nm.
  3. Tighten bolts for sump/transmission to 40 Nm. Use new bolts.
  4. Tighten securing bolts for sump in diagonal sequence to 12 Nm.

Note. After installing the sump assembly, the sealant must dry for approx. 30 minutes. Only then fill the engine with oil.

  1. Fill engine with oil and check oil level. Refer to «Oil pump, component overview»(ref-276269-S42746714842008010300000) .
