1. Universal dial gauge bracket VW 387
2. Dial gauge

Work sequence

1. Perform measurement with roller rocker fingers and supporting elements removed. Center bearing caps for respective camshaft remain tightened.

Scheme 179

1. Secure universal dial gauge bracket VW 387 with dial gauge to cylinder head.
2. Determine axial clearance.

1. Wear limit: (axial clearance): 0.10 mm

Special tools and equipment required

1. Valve lever VW 541/1 A with press piece VW 541/6
2. Assembly device for valves 2036
3. Spark plug socket 3122 B
4. Puller for valve stem oil seal 3364

1. Press tool for valve stem oil seal 3365
2. Adapter T40012

Removing

1. Remove timing chain from camshafts. Refer to «Camshaft timing chain, removing from camshafts»(ref-276269-S22252894662008010300000) .
2. Remove camshafts. Refer to «Camshafts, removing and installing»(ref-276269-S35464212592008010300000) .
3. Remove roller rocker fingers together with supporting elements.
4. Place roller rocker fingers and supporting elements down on a clean surface in order that they were removed.

Note. The roller rocker fingers and the supporting elements must not be interchanged.

1. Remove spark plugs with spark plug wrench 3122 B.
2. Set piston of respective cylinder to "bottom dead center".

Scheme 181

1. Install assembly device for valves 2036 with adapter plates 2036/1 and adjust to correct position.
2. Screw adapter T40012 with seal finger-tight into corresponding spark plug thread, connect to compressed air hose and apply a steady pressure.

1. Air pressure: at least 6 bar

1. Remove valve springs using valve lever VW541/1 A with press piece VW 541/6.

Note. Tap assembly lever lightly with a hammer to loosen valve keepers that are stuck.

1. Remove valve stem oil seals using puller for valve stem oil seals 3364.

Installing

Scheme 182

1. Insert plastic sleeve -A- onto valve stem to prevent damage to new valve stem oil seal -B-.
2. Lubricate sealing lip of valve stem oil seal.
3. Insert valve stem oil seal into press piece for valve stem oil seal 3365 and push carefully onto valve guide.
4. Install camshafts. Refer to «Camshafts, removing and installing»(ref-276269-S35464212592008010300000) .
