Scheme 240

Scheme 240: Front exhaust pipe, removing and installing
  1. Oxygen sensor open ring spanner set 3337

Removing

  1. Remove body brace -1- (arrows).

Scheme 241

Scheme 241
  1. Loosen both oxygen sensors -1- and -2- about 1 turn (accessible from above).
  1. Remove fasteners -1...3- and remove center sound insulation.
  1. Remove bolts (arrows) for protective cover.
  2. Disconnect connectors for all oxygen sensors and move clear.
  1. Unscrew wire guide (arrows).
  1. Unbolt catalytic converter from front exhaust pipe (arrows).

Note. To avoid damage, the flexible joints in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°.

  1. Separate exhaust system at clamp (arrows).
  2. Push clamp back and remove catalytic converter.
  1. Completely unscrew both oxygen sensors -1- and -2-.
  1. Unbolt flexible coupling for driveshaft at bevel box (arrows).

Note. When loosening the bolts, counterhold at the driveshaft flange/final drive with a suitable lever.

  1. Push front section of driveshaft approx. 10 mm toward rear.

Scheme 242

Scheme 242
  1. Unbolt flexible coupling from driveshaft (arrows).

Note. When loosening the bolts, counterhold using a suitable lever at the triangular flange.

  1. Push front section of driveshaft as far as possible toward rear.
CAUTIONAfter unscrewing the bolts -A- at pendulum support, the engine/transmission assembly swings slightly forward. The seal (arrow) in the flange of the driveshaft must not be damaged. The driveshaft must be replaced if the oil seal is damaged.
  1. Unscrew pendulum support from subframe (arrows -A-).
  2. Carefully push engine/transmission assembly toward front and remove flexible coupling.

Scheme 243

Scheme 243
  1. Unbolt center heat shield at both front securing points (lower arrows) and swing it down slightly.

Note. The bracket for the exhaust system (upper arrows) remains secured.

Scheme 244

Scheme 244
  1. Unbolt front section of driveshaft from rear section (arrows).
  2. Push front section of driveshaft toward front and swivel it out of rear section of driveshaft.

Note. Take care to bend the front section of the driveshaft downward as little as possible when disconnecting it.

Scheme 245

Scheme 245
  1. Remove front heat shield (arrows).
  1. Unbolt front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifolds (arrows).
  2. Remove front exhaust pipe.

Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse order. Note the following

Note. Replace gaskets and self-locking nuts.

  1. Install front section of driveshaft.

Refer to 39 FINAL DRIVE - DIFFERENTIAL

  1. Install body brace.

Refer to 40 FRONT SUSPENSION

  1. Align exhaust system free of stress. Refer to «Exhaust system, aligning free of stress»(ref-276269-S03604659422008010300000) .
