Checking the component
- Slacken off the EVAP canister purge valve
- Connect a vacuum pump to the EVAP canister purge valve terminal (B). Pump a vacuum. Check that there is no leakage through the EVAP canister purge valve by listening to and checking via the pump gauge that the pressure is stable
- Connect the EVAP canister purge valve connector
- Ignition on
- Activate the evaporative emission system (EVAP) valve. When the EVAP canister purge valve is activated, the valve opens and clicks. Check on the pump gauge that the vacuum drops (the pressure evens out) when the EVAP valve opens. If the function is OK, there must be no leakage when the EVAP canister purge valve is closed (stable pressure on the pump gauge) and the vacuum must drop when the EVAP canister purge valve opens (the pressure evens out). The EVAP canister purge valve is defective if the function is faulty. If the function of the EVAP canister purge valve is OK, check: The hose and hose terminals between the EVAP canister purge valve and the intake manifold. Check for leakage and blockages The hose and hose terminals between the EVAP canister and the EVAP canister purge valve. Check for leakage and blockages. Remedy as necessary. Checking the engine coolant temperature (ECT)
Note. The test cannot be started if the engine coolant temperature (ECT) is below 70 °C.

Checking for blockage between the fuel tank pressure sensor and the fuel tank
HINT: If "small leak" is detected after a completed quick test of the fuel tank system, it may in certain cases be due to a blockage between the fuel tank pressure sensor and the fuel tank.
HINT: The method below is used to determine whether the detection of "small leak" after completed quick tests is caused by a blockage between the fuel tank pressure sensor and the fuel tank. It can be carried out by running the test with the fuel tank filler cap removed. Normally a "large leak" is detected with the fuel tank filler cap removed. If a "small leak" is detected with the fuel tank filler cap removed it indicates a blockage between the fuel tank pressure sensor and fuel tank.
Note. If the EVAP canister fills with the fuel vapor the test is interrupted. The EVAP canister fills with fuel vapor faster if the evaporative emission system (EVAP) valve is operating and the fuel tank filler cap is removed. Start the quick test directly after engine start and do not let the engine run at idle speed for longer than necessary.
- Remove the fuel tank filler cap
- Engine idling
- Start the quick test with the fuel tank filler cap removed. In particular check the fuel tank pressure (red line) when the "large leak" test is running. If a "large leak" is detected with the fuel tank filler cap removed, the most likely cause is leakage. Continue fault-tracing according to "small leak". If the test is cancelled or "small leak" is detected with the fuel tank filler cap removed and the fuel tank pressure (red line) falls more slowly than normal during the test it may be due to a blockage in the hose or hose terminal between the tank and the fuel tank pressure sensor. This can be fault-traced by removing the hoses to the evaporative emission (EVAP) system components one at a time and carrying out a quick test between each operation. If a "large leak" is detected after the quick test when the hose has been disconnected the fault is in the direction of the airflow (calculated from the hose that has been disconnected). HINT: The direction of airflow during a quick test can be calculated from the fuel tank: fuel tank, evaporative emission system (EVAP) canister, evaporative emission system (EVAP) valve. The fuel tank pressure sensor measures the pressure in the hose between the fuel tank and the evaporative emission system (EVAP) canister. HINT: If the hose for the EVAP canister is detached from the fuel tank and a "large leak" is detected, there is a blockage in the tank hose terminal. Remedy as necessary. Reset all the components. Carry out a quick test of the tank system before the car is delivered to the customer. NOTE: The battery voltage must be correct throughout the entire test. The test can take up to 15 minutes, depending on the quantity of fuel in the fuel tank. Checking blockage between tank pressure sensor and tank
HINT: If a small leak is detected after a quick test of the tank system, in may be due to blockage between the tank pressure sensor and the tank.
HINT: The method below is used to determine if the small leak detected after the quick test is caused by blockage between the tank pressure sensor and tank. This is done by running the test with the tank cap removed. Normally, a major leak is detected if the cap is off. If a small leak is detected when the tank cap is off, there is a blockage between the tank pressure sensor and the tank.
HINT
Note. If the canister is filled with fuel vapor, the test is interrupted. The canister fills with fuel vapor more quickly if the canister purge valve is regulating and the tank cap is removed. Therefore, start the quick test immediately after engine start and do not allow the engine to idle more than necessary.
- Remove the tank cap.
- Engine idling
- Start the quick test with the tank cap removed. Especially check tank pressure (yellow line) during the test for major leaks. If a major leak is detected when the tank cap is off, the cause of the fault is likely leakage. Continue fault tracing as described for a small leak. If the test is interrupted or a small leak is detected when the tank cap is removed and tank pressure (yellow line) drops more quickly than normal during the test, there may be blockage in a hose or hose connection between the tank and tank pressure sensor. This can be fault traced by detaching the hoses to EVAP system components (one at a time) and performing a quick test for each. If a major leak is detected after the quick test when the hose has been disconnected, the fault is against the direction of airflow (calculated from the disconnected hose). HINT: Airflow direction during the quick test can be calculated from the fuel tank: fuel tank, canister, canister purge valve, intake pipe. The tank pressure sensor measures the pressure in the hose between the fuel tank and the canister. HINT: If, for example, the hose to the canister is detached from the fuel tank and a major leak is detected, there is a blockage in the tank hose connection. Remedy as necessary. Restore all components and then perform a quick test of the tank system before delivering the vehicle to the customer. Select an alternative to continue: Continue fault tracing for small leak. Verifying
HINT: After repair it is necessary to check that the malfunction has been corrected.
- Start the engine and let it idle until it has reached operating temperature (approx. 80 °C).
- Test-drive the vehicle on road. Perform float driving (normal road load), constant speed around 70-90 km/h for approx. 30-40 seconds.
- Connect VCT2000 to the diagnostics socket without turning off the engine. NOTE: If the engine is turned off, stored fault status will be erased and the test-drive has to be repeated.
