Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) 1-6-1 in tables 4-8 above, means that the fault is in the combined instrument panel.
- Read off the response code again.
- If diagnostic trouble code (DTC) 1-6-1 recurs replace the combined instrument panel. According to «Instrument cluster, replacement»(ref-408443-S06756944592011071200000) .
Expose dashboard
| WARNING | Cars equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) must be treated extra carefully when repairs are being made. This is to help prevent: 1. Injuries when carrying out a repair. 2. Damage or malfunction of the SRS system. Repair to either the SRS itself or a related system or component must be carried out by an authorized Volvo workshop. Refer to the appropriate SRS service information for complete system information. |
- Remove battery - lead.
Scheme 651
- Remove glove compartment holders.
- Remove the six screws holding the glove compartment and remove the glove compartment.

- If a passenger-side airbag is fitted, remove the 4 mounting screws from the underneath of the module.

- Remove cover washers and screws to side defroster vents.
- Remove panel vents as follows: turn down and pull out or pry off gently with a screwdriver at the side and pull out. Remove both vent and air duct on RH side.

- Remove speaker grills on both sides.
- Remove speakers. Push plastic plugs down in center.
- Undo connector.

- Unscrew the 12 mounting screws holding the cover panel. Cars fitted with passenger-side airbags have a screw missing at the top of the glove compartment. Cars not fitted with passenger-side airbags have a screw missing at the top by the RH speaker (marked 2 in (Scheme 655) ).
- Lift cover panel off carefully.
Once you have removed the cover panel, you can connect the test box and use it for fault-tracing with the dashboard. See appropriate specifications.

- Remove both dashboard connectors and the connector to trip computer if any.
- Undo both clip-on locks at the top and lift the dashboard out.
When replacing the dashboard
- VDO: Code for right market and program in mileage and select service interval as shown in «Diagnostic test mode (DTM) 5 - Reading off data»(ref-408443-S26369521052011071200000) and «Diagnostic test mode (DTM) 6 - Data entry»(ref-408443-S42562934502011071200000) .
Note. It is important to do this in the right order and as shown under DTM 6.
- Read off and erase any DTCs.
- YAZAKI: Write in the service and warranty manual that the dashboard has been replaced. Note down the gauge readings and the date the replacement was made.
- Reassemble in reverse order.
Note. Make sure that the flap on the underneath of the cover fits into its slot.

Note. Points to note when working on dashboard: Cleanliness: workplace must be free from dust, dirt, oil, solvents etc. • Always wash your hands before taking the dashboard apart. Do not use hand cream or hand lotion after washing. If using gloves, these must be thin cotton cloth. Synthetic materials could lead to a static buildup. • Printed circuit board must not be exposed to static electricity. • Do not touch printed circuit board or instrument scale surfaces. • Do not move needles so they change position. They are calibrated at the factory. Moving them may make instruments read wrongly.
Replacing individual components
If dashboard is not working, this may be because the fuse has blown.
- Remove printed circuit board and check fuse on the inside. To replace fuse, see «Replacing fuse»(ref-408443-S38575781032011071200000) .
Electrical faults are very likely to be due to faults in the printed circuit board.
- Change the printed circuit board first.
- Assemble and connect dashboard.
- Test dashboard in DTM (see «DTM 1 - Self-test»(ref-408443-S14834053942011071200000) ).
- If fault persists, replace instrument panel.

- Remove time/temperature/trip computer module which is located in the lower center. Undo the two screws and the connector.
Note. Do not pull on leads: hold connector and pull it out carefully.

- Remove cover. Undo the 11 screws marked A and the three marked B .
The screws marked B hold the odometer to the base plate.

- Lift printed circuit board off of base plate. The printed circuit board is pressed onto the base plate and must be removed with care.
- Undo odometer connector.

- Replacing fuse. Fit fuse to outside of printed circuit board. The arrows in (Scheme 662) show the two holes which act as screw holes for the new fuse.
Use the fuse kit supplied as spare, part no.: 9128110.
If the fuse has blown, this may be because something somewhere else is wrong.
Follow fault-tracing procedures.

- Remove base plate from instrument housing. Undo the 9 screws (Scheme 663)and the 2 screws in circuit board.

Note. If circuit board was not earlier disassembled, carefully coax the instrument plate from base plate.

- Remove odometer and reset button.
- When replacing odometer, pull it straight out of trip meter.

- Carefully remove the symbol plates mounted on two plastic pegs on the instrument casing.
- Replace and install the new symbol plates.
Install printed circuit board
- Connect odometer leads. Connector will only fit one way round.

- Install printed circuit board by pressing on bulb holders so contact pin goes in
- If a new printed circuit board is fitted then the bulbs shall be moved over from the old one.

Install cover
- Fit cover and screw dashboard together with screws A and B see scheme 26(11 + 3).
Install module
- Insert time / temperature / trip computer module, screw it fast with the 2 screws and connect the connector.
Reinstall dashboard in car
- After connecting the connectors, fit a new contact protector to the 30-pin connector, part number: 912 8111.
- Reinstall panel and other components in reverse order as per «Expose dashboard»(ref-408443-S39750301232011071200000) .
When replacing printed circuit board
- Diagnosis: Read off and erase any DTCs and code for market, program in mileage and service interval as per «Diagnostic test mode (DTM) 6 - Data entry»(ref-408443-S42562934502011071200000) .

- Install printed circuit board and screw down. Put right screw in right place. 11 screws type A with metric threads. 4 screws type B with plastic threads and pointed ends. 6 screws type C with plastic threads and blunt ends. Do not tighten screws too tight.
Install time / temperature module and screw in place and connect connector.

- Replace fuse. Fit fuse on outside of printed circuit board (Scheme 674) Use fuse kit supplied as spare.
- Check for open-circuit in fuse with an ohmmeter. Ohmmeter should read infinite resistance. If fuse has blown, this may be due to a short-circuit somewhere else. Follow fault-tracing procedures.
- Test dashboard.
- Install new contact protector on 30-pin connector (part no.: 9128111).
- Reinstall cover panel and other components in reverse order as per «Expose dashboard»(ref-408443-S39750301232011071200000) .
Manual data entry
First go into diagnostic test mode (DTM) 5 and select the service parameter you want to change. Then read off the code stored and within 30 seconds go into diagnostic test mode (DTM) 6 and enter the new code. As follows
- Switch on ignition.
- Select position 7 on data link connector (DLC) A.
- Press the button five times, briefly but distinctly.
You are now in diagnostic test mode (DTM) 5.
Indicate the service parameter code you want to change
Enter the code for the service parameter contained in Information and check , the first column.
- Enter the first digit while the LED is still lit.
- Wait until the LED is lit and enter the second digit.
- Wait until the LED is lit and enter the third digit of the code. Read off the response code stored.
Entering data when replacing a combined instrument panel
Carry out the following when installing a new combined instrument panel.
- 1) Program speedometer type.
- 2) Program tachometer type.
- 3) Program mileage.
- 4) If changing service parameters, program new service reminder indicator (SRI) lamp parameters.
Note. It is important to do this in the correct order.
Note. Contrary to the other settings the mileage does not have a corresponding code. Each digit has the same corresponding number of flashes/presses of the button. This does not apply to the digit 0 which corresponds to 10 flashes/presses of the button.

Example
The combined instrument panel has been replaces and the mileage 012 345 km needs to be entered into the new combined instrument panel.
Carry out the following
- Go into diagnostic test mode (DTM) 5.
- Select code 1-1-2 for the three first digits in the mileage and read off the digits stored. As the new combined instrument panel has no mileage entered the LED flashes out three zeros (3 x 10 flashes).
- Press the button 6 times within 30 seconds to go into diagnostic test mode (DTM) 6. Wait for the LED to light.
Enter the three first digits of the mileage on the old instrument: 012 as follows
- Digit 1: LED lit and then 10 presses.
- Digit 2: LED lit and then 1 press.
- Digit 3: LED lit and then 2 presses.
The LED flashes as many times as you have pressed the button allowing you to confirm that you have entered the correct value. Note the number of flashes. If incorrect, start from the beginning.
Note. It is important to enter the digits correctly as this can only be carried out once.
- When the LED is lit, confirm the values entered by pressing the button for more than 5 seconds.
- Release the button and the LED will go out.
Repeat the procedure for the three last digits in the mileage.
- Code 1-1-1.
- Enter digits 3, 4 and 5 as above.
- Check and confirm.

Example: Selecting new service parameters
Service parameter 1-3-1: "Mileage interval for activating service reminder indicator (SRI)" must be changed from 5,000 km, code 1-1-1, to 7,500 km, code 1-1-2. See Table 5, 1-3-1 Mileage interval for service reminder indicator (SRI) activation .
Carry out the following
- Go into diagnostic test mode (DTM) 5.
- Enter the code for the service parameter you want. 1-3-1 in this case.

- Enter the new code 1-1-2 for 7,500 km.

Note down any DTCs
Watch the LED, count the number of flashes and note down the DTC.
- Press the button again to see if there are any more DTCs to come. DTCs are displayed in the order in which they are stored. Once all DTCs have been displayed, they are repeated in the same order.

DTCs cannot be erased until all DTCs in store have been read at least once, i.e. until the first DTC appears a second time.
To erase DTCs in DTM 1, proceed as follows
- Press button and hold down for more than 5 seconds.
- Release button. LED will come on and stay on after 3 seconds.
- Press button again and hold down for at least 5 seconds.
- Release button. LED will go out.
DTCs are now erased.
Checking that DTCs are erased
Switch ignition off, then switch it on again. Check that DTCs are erased by pressing the button briefly but firmly once (as above).
If display reads 1-1-1, this means all DTCs have been erased.
If not, start again from above.
