  1. When changing an engine control module (ECM) from one car to another, remember to note any diagnostic trouble code (DTC) (s) before removing component.
  2. The engine control module (ECM) must not be removed from the car until the main relay has interrupted its power supply. This may take up to 150 seconds (Motronic 4.4) (cars with an immobilizer 245 seconds and 90 seconds for cars with Motronic 4.3) after the ignition has been switched off.
  3. Always check the control module and connector on the control module box for bent or damaged pins or sockets.

As part of the anti-theft system on cars equipped with an engine immobilizer, the engine control module (ECM) box in the engine compartment is locked into place with a locking strip. The locking strip is installed with a security screw.

  1. Mark up the center of the screw and drill a suitable hole for a screw puller. Insert screw puller and remove the screw.
  2. Remove the security strap across the control module box cover.
  3. Clean the control module box cover carefully so that no dirt or residue falls into the box when it is opened.

  1. Check that supply from main relay has been interrupted. Easiest method is to place fingertips on idle air control (IAC) valve. When the valve stops vibrating, the main relay has cut off supply to the system.

  1. Open engine control module (ECM) box cover and remove Motronic 4.3/4.4 engine control module (ECM) (module nearest engine).

Inspect connector pins and sockets for damage.

  3. Read off any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

Installing security strap (Motronic 4.4)

As part of the anti-theft system on cars equipped with an engine immobilizer, the engine control module (ECM) box in the engine compartment is locked into place with a locking strip. The locking strip is installed with a security screw.

CAUTIONBefore reinstalling security strap, ensure that the car has been repaired and no faults persist.
  1. Locate the slit underneath the control module box with your fingers and hook the locking strip into it.
  2. Fold over the locking strip and tighten the security screw (P/N 1334099-7) so that its head breaks off.

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) EFI-121 is stored if the signal from the mass air flow (MAF) sensor is lower than 0.2 V or greater than 2.2 V at idling speed, or is outside its permitted range for engine speed (RPM) and throttle angle.

If the fuel/air mixture deviates from lambda=1 the short-term fuel trim will compensate for this by adjusting injection time so that lambda=1 is achieved. When the short-term fuel trim makes an adjustment, the integrator median must be adjusted by the long-term trim.   1. Ignition off.
  2. Remove idle air control (IAC) valve.
  3. Hold the valve by the connector, twist the valve rapidly but carefully back and forth. Listen for the sound of the slide switching. CAUTION: Under no circumstances touch the slide with a screwdriver or other tool, as this may scratch and damage the slide.

The idle air control (IAC) valve control slide should switch.

  1. OK Refer to «Checking for contact resistance and oxidation»(ref-404024-S07680828262011061000000)
  2. NOT OK Refer to «Replacing Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve»(ref-404024-S11286303042011061000000)
  1. Check idle air control (IAC) valve and engine control module (ECM) connectors for contact resistance and oxidation and remedy according to «Contact resistance and oxidation»(ref-403956-S41958999262011061000000) .

HINT: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied as follows

  1. Ignition off.
  2. Disconnect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) from the VIDA station and use it in stand-alone mode.
  3. Throttle position (TP) sensor and engine control module (ECM) connected.
  4. Ignition on. Go into the Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) menu. Zero all adaptive functions but the flywheel.

  1. Volvo Scan Tool (ST) connect to VIDA station.
  2. Start the engine and run it until it reaches operating temperature, at least 85 °C.
  3. Engine idling Select Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to read off the value of the idle air trim adaptation. When the idle air trim adaptation value has stabilized. Rev the engine to approximately 2000 and idle it. Wait approximately 30 seconds and read off the value again. Repeat this until the value is stable.

The value should be between -5 and 15 kg/h.

  1. OK VERIFIED: Troubleshooting has been completed.
  2. NOT OK Refer to «Information»(ref-404024-S08882033052011061000000)

The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.
