Checking the components and wires

The engine control module has detected a fault in the communication between the immobilizer and the engine control module on an earlier occasion.

Visually check the immobilizer connections and connector as described in Inspect terminals visually

Check the signal wire between engine control module B22 (B32) and immobilizer B5 (A35) for an intermittent open circuit as described in Open-circuit, intermittent faults , for an intermittent short circuit to ground as described in Short-circuit to ground, intermittent faults , and for an intermittent short circuit to voltage supply as described in Short-circuit to supply voltage, intermittent faults .

Do the necessary corrective action.

Checking the signal wire

Checking the components and programming

If the checking of wiring and connections did not lead to the fault being remedied, the cause may be that the VIN numbers in the immobilizer and engine control module (ECM) do not correspond. This occurs when one of these has been reused from another vehicle. Replace with a new, unused unit.

Another reason can be that the immobilizer has been programmed with the incorrect engine type at installation.

The immobilizer or engine control module (ECM) may be damaged.

Remedy as necessary.

Checking a short-circuit in CAN cables

Connect an ohmmeter between the relevant CAN cable (CAN-L and CAN-H) and the power supply, and between the CAN cable and ground. Twist the connectors and turn the cable harness to different positions at each reading to determine any intermittent short-circuits.

Take the following readings

  1. The resistance between CAN-L and ground
  2. The resistance between CAN-L and voltage
  3. The resistance between CAN-H and ground
  4. The resistance between CAN-H and voltage.

The resistance must be infinite or very high in all cases (greater than 1 Mohms).

HINT: The reading can be taken from the same connector if the CAN cables, power supply and ground are exposed. If possible, take readings on the rear of the connector to prevent damage to the terminals in the connector. If this is not possible, use the adapter wiring or loose terminal pins to obtain a good contact.

Was a fault detected?

Checking the traffic load on the CAN cables

  1. Connect the battery
  2. Ignition on Also read: «Battery, disconnecting»(ref-438953-S33389199492011120700000) Faults in the CAN network may be due to a control module sending faulty messages that disrupt "normal" communication. When messages are sent incorrectly, this results in a considerable increase in the amount of traffic on the CAN network. Check the load by measuring the average voltage value on the CAN cables in relation to ground. Connect a voltmeter between CAN-L and ground. The voltage must be approximately 2.3 V. Then connect a voltmeter between CAN-H and ground. The voltage must be approximately 2.8 V. HINT: If possible measure from the rear of the affected connectors so that they are not damaged.

Is the value OK?

Identifying fault causes in the CAN network

  1. Disconnect a control module that disconnects the CAN network (a control module that has four terminals to the CAN network). HINT: For the low speed network, suitable places for disconnecting the network are at the steering wheel module (SWM), the driver information module (DIM) or the climate control module (CCM). In the event of a short-circuit between one of the CAN cables and voltage or ground, the fault can be located by disconnecting a control module that disconnects the CAN network. Readings can then be taken to determine on which side of the disconnected control module the fault is located. Connect an ohmmeter between the CAN cable and supply voltage or ground. Take readings at both ends of the CAN network where the network is disconnected. Twist and bend the cable harness to locate any intermittent short-circuits. The resistance must be infinite or very high (greater than 1Mohms). If a fault can be localized in one direction, disconnect the network at a point further down on the CAN network in the direction in which the fault was discovered and repeat the reading. In this way, try to identify where in the network the fault might be located. HINT: A short-circuit between the CAN cables and supply voltage or ground may be in either the wiring or in a control module. Rectify the wiring as necessary. Replace the control module if the fault has been localized to a control module.

Identifying a control module in the CAN network

  1. Connect the battery Also read: «Battery, disconnecting»(ref-438953-S33389199492011120700000)
  2. Ignition on If the load on the CAN network is too high, this may be due to a control module sending faulty messages on the CAN network (known as a disruptive control module). The fault may also be due to an intermittent short-circuit to supply voltage or ground in one of the CAN cables. This results in the control modules on the CAN network starting to send faulty messages. The faults can occur without a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) being stored by the control modules. The voltage can be measured between the CAN cables in order to check the load on the CAN network. Connect a voltmeter between the CAN cables. If the communication on the network is correct, the average voltage value should be approximately 0.5 V (0.4 V to 0.6 V). If there is a fault in the communication, the voltage reading will be approximately 0.7 V or higher. In order to identify from which control module the faulty communication is being transmitted, cut the supply voltage to one control module at a time and check the voltage in the CAN cables again. The easiest way to cut the supply voltage is to remove a fuse. Repeat until the voltage between the CAN cables drops to approximately 0.5 V. HINT: When the probable faulty control module has been identified, connect and disconnect the supply voltage to the control module a number of times to verify that the fault appears and disappears. NOTE: Do not cut the power to the central electronic module (CEM) unless it is the last control module left to check. The control module that is communicating incorrectly must be replaced. Remedy as necessary. NOTE: Following a fault involving "disruptive" control modules, other modules may remain in "Limp-Home mode" even after switching the ignition off and on a number of times. To remedy this, disconnect and reconnect the battery negative terminal to restore the control modules to normal function.

  1. Disconnect a control module that disconnects the CAN network (a control module that has four terminals to the CAN network). HINT: For the low speed network, suitable places for disconnecting the network are at the steering wheel module (SWM), the driver information module (DIM) or the climate control module (CCM). If the throttle angle does not match, diagnostic trouble code ECM-903F is stored. The diagnostic trouble code is pretty much always stored as the result of another trouble code in the engine control module (ECM). Check whether the engine control module (ECM) has stored any other diagnostic trouble codes that indicate that the electronic throttle module (ETM) has had trouble fulfilling the desired throttle angle.

If other diagnostic trouble codes have been stored that indicate a communication fault on the CAN network, it indicates that ECM-903F may have been stored due to improper functioning of the CAN network.

If ECM-901A, ECM-902A, ECM-902B, ECM-911A, ECM-912A and/or ECM-E000 are stored, fault trace these diagnostic trouble codes.

If other diagnostic trouble codes have been stored that indicate a problem with the throttle unit or its throttle regulation, it indicates that the throttle unit may have had trouble fulfilling the desired throttle angle. Any diagnostic trouble codes that are stored should be fault traced first. If ECM-914F, ECM-9150, ECM-9160, ECM-9190, ECM-91A7 and/or ECM-91B7 are stored, these diagnostic trouble codes are to be fault traced first.

If other diagnostic trouble codes have been stored that indicate a dirty throttle unit, this indicates that the throttle unit may have had trouble fulfilling the desired throttle angle. Any diagnostic trouble codes that are stored should be fault traced first. If ECM-130A is stored, fault trace this diagnostic trouble code.

If ECM-903F is stored alone without any of the above diagnostic trouble codes, use the trouble code's frozen values plus the counter to determine the operating conditions when the fault was first detected and how often the fault occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is. If the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was stored under operating conditions that means external factors, such as low battery voltage during engine start-up, are suspected to be the cause fault-trace and remedy as necessary.

If the trouble code was stored when battery voltage was low and engine speed was close to 0 rpm when the fault occurred, it could indicate that the fault arose when the vehicle was stationary with the ignition on for a long period, thereby draining the battery, or that the fault arose due to battery voltage becoming low when the customer started the engine. This, in turn, indicates that the battery's charging status is not OK. Check the battery charge status, connections to the battery and chassis and the battery cables for contact resistance and oxidation. Remedy as necessary. Otherwise, continue as follows.

The solution to the problem may be to download the upgraded software. Adjustments that have been made in the upgraded software make the system more tolerant to brief and intermittent disruptions, which previously generated diagnostic trouble code ECM-903F.

Check, using the identification of the upgraded software Engine control module (ECM)/Electronic throttle module (ETM) that the correct software is in the Electronic throttle module (ETM) and the Engine control module (ECM). The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if software that is not compatible is mixed. This can, for example, occur if the software in the Electronic throttle module (ETM) is older than the upgraded software in the Engine control module (ECM) or if a throttle unit, which is designed for a 5-cylinder turbocharged engine, is installed on a 5-cylinder non-turbocharged engine.

Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is. If the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was stored under operating conditions that means external factors, such as low battery voltage during engine start-up, are suspected to be the cause fault-trace and remedy as necessary. If no external factors are suspected and if the fault is permanent, i.e. the fault has been detected several times, try a new Engine control module (ECM).

Checking the throttle position sensor

Check whether the engine control module (ECM) has stored any diagnostic trouble codes that indicate a fault in the throttle position sensor of the throttle unit. If diagnostic trouble code ECM-9150 and/or ECM-9160 are stored, they are to be fault traced first. Otherwise, continue as follows.

Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is. If the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was stored under operating conditions that means external factors, such as low battery voltage during engine start-up, are suspected to be the cause fault-trace and remedy as necessary.

Download the upgraded software. This software contains several improvements geared toward the throttle unit's throttle position sensor, including improvement of the tolerances for short-term, intermittent disruptions to the throttle position sensor signals. The greatest improvement is that the software can handle a substantially greater difference between throttle position sensors' signals than the previous software.

  1. Perform test of throttle module's damper position sensor. Click on the VCT2000 symbol to start the test. NOTE: Certain types of malfunctions of the electronic throttle module (ETM), related to the two internal throttle position sensors, may be temperature-dependent. To be sure of the result, the test should be repeated a number of times in the temperature range between cold engine (ambient temperature) and warm engine (warm engine compartment, engine and induction system).

If the test indicates that the throttle position sensors are not OK, try a new throttle unit (ETM).

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-917F may be stored alone but it is very unusual. Usually it is stored together with one or more other diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that indicate faults in any of the signals from the accelerator pedal. Turbo engines and 6-cyl non-turbo engines

Check whether the engine control module (ECM) has stored any other diagnostic trouble codes that indicate a fault in the pulse width modulated (PWM) signal from the accelerator pedal position sensor. Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is.

If, for example, diagnostic trouble code (DTC), ECM-9520 is stored and it was stored at approximately the same time as ECM-9180, this indicates that the Engine control module (ECM) and Electronic throttle module (ETM) have detected a problem with the pulse width modulated (PWM) signal from the accelerator pedal position sensor. Then use the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information from ECM-9520 to determine which type of fault cause could have caused the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

If, however, ECM-959F is stored together with ECM-9180 and ECM-958F is not stored, this indicates that the Engine control module (ECM) has detected that the pulse width modulated (PWM) signal is OK, but that the Electronic throttle module (ETM) has detected that the signal is incorrect. Due to this, it is possible to determine if the fault has occurred for longer than 0.5 seconds (1 second for upgraded software), because the signal from the Electronic throttle module (ETM) must be incorrect for more than 0.5 seconds, for ECM-959F to be stored.

  1. Check the cable between Engine control module (ECM) terminal #A56 (#A56) and Electronic throttle module (ETM) terminal #1. Check for an open-circuit.

If there is not another diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that indicates that the pulse width modulated (PWM) signal is incorrect stored, this means that the signal that reaches the Engine control module (ECM) is OK. It may also be the case that the fault is so short-term that the other diagnostics in the Engine control module (ECM) have not managed to detect the fault. This can depend on whether the engine has been started or not when the fault was detected. If the engine speed was at 0 rpm in the frozen values, this indicates that the fault has been stored for longer than 0.1 seconds, but for less than 0.4 seconds, otherwise ECM-958F would have been stored. If, however the frozen values show that the engine speed was greater than 0 rpm, when the fault occurred, this indicates that the signal that the Engine control module (ECM) receives is OK. Otherwise ECM-9520 would have been stored together with ECM-9180.

  1. Check the cable between Engine control module (ECM) terminal #A56 (#A56) and Electronic throttle module (ETM) terminal #1. Check for an intermittent open-circuit.

Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. If the fault was stored at a battery voltage lower than 10 V with engine speed at 0 rpm, this indicates that the fault may have occurred when the engine was started. This, in turn, indicates that the battery's charging status is not OK.

For markets where upgraded software, released during year 2006 or later, is available, the solution may be to download the upgraded software. As the detection time has increased from 0.1 to 0.9 seconds, the upgraded software becomes much more tolerant towards short intermittent interference among other things.

HINT: Small objects can cause the throttle disc to temporarily stick, which can generate this diagnostic trouble code.

If ECM-130A is stored together with ECM-91CF, ECM-130A must be fault-traced and remedied first. This is because ECM-91CF is incorrectly stored when ECM-130A, Permanent fault is stored, at the same time as cruise control is activated. This can be solved by fault-tracing and remedying ECM-130A. Otherwise, continue as follows.

For turbo engines and 6-cylinder aspirated engines

If ECM-91CF is stored but not ECM-130A, the solution for the markets where upgraded software, released during 2006 or later, is available, can be to download the upgraded software. Modifications have been made in the upgraded software, that do not place great demands on the Electronic throttle module (ETM) and Engine control module (ECM) reacting at precisely the same time, several seconds can now pass until the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored. In other words, if cruise control is activated using the upgraded software, and then the brakes are applied, the Electronic throttle module (ETM) permits up to 2 seconds to pass before the Engine control module (ECM) signals that cruise control is no longer active. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored after 0.5 seconds in earlier software. Otherwise, continue as follows.

If there is another diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in the Engine control module (ECM) that indicates a brake fault, ECM-9400 and/or ECM-914F, this/these must be fault-traced first. Otherwise, continue as follows.

Check, using VIDA vehicle communication, that the Engine control module (ECM) receives the correct information about the status of the stop lamp switch and brake pedal position sensor. If the parameter for the brake light switch indicates the wrong status, check the signal cable between the brake light switch and the engine control module (ECM) for open circuit.

Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is. If the counters show that the problem has occurred frequently in recent time, it is highly likely that the problem can be recreated during troubleshooting. If the counters show that the problem is extremely intermittent, it is not very likely that the problem can be recreated during troubleshooting.

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-91DF is stored of the Electronic throttle module (ETM) receives information from the stop lamp switch that indicates that the brake pedal has been depressed, but the Engine control module (ECM) transmits information that the brake pedal has been released. The information that the Engine control module (ECM) transmits, based on the signal from the stop lamp switch. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be stored alone, but it is more common that it has been stored due to no CAN communication with the Engine control module (ECM).

If one or several of the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) ECM-901A, ECM-902A, ECM-902B, ECM-911A, ECM-912A, ECM-E000 and/or ECM-E003 are stored at the same time as ECM-91DF, continue fault-tracing according to one of these diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). If there is another diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in the Engine control module (ECM) that indicates a brake fault, ECM-9400 and/or ECM-914F, this/these must be fault-traced first. Otherwise, continue as follows.

Check, using VIDA vehicle communication, that the Engine control module (ECM) receives the correct information about the status of the stop lamp switch. If the parameter indicates the wrong status, check the signal cable between the brake light switch and the engine control module (ECM) for open circuit, short circuit to ground and short circuit to supply voltage.

Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is. If the counters show that the problem has occurred frequently in recent time, it is highly likely that the problem can be recreated during troubleshooting. If the counters show that the problem is extremely intermittent, it is not very likely that the problem can be recreated during troubleshooting.

For markets where upgraded software, released during year 2006 or later, is available, the solution may be to download the upgraded software. As the detection time has increased from 0.3 to 5 seconds, the upgraded software becomes more tolerant towards short intermittent interferences, delays in communication between other CAN connected control modules etc. among other things.

Checking the power supply and ground terminals

Example of conclusions one can draw from information based on counters and frozen values

  1. The diagnostic trouble code indicates that Electronic throttle module (ETM) has detected that the battery voltage was low, but it is unclear how Engine control module (ECM) has detected the battery voltage. The battery voltage accounted for in the frozen values is the voltage feed to Engine control module (ECM) and not Electronic throttle module (ETM). If the voltage feed to Engine control module (ECM) is low, this indicates that one should look for a problem that may affect both Engine control module (ECM) and Electronic throttle module (ETM) or may affect other control modules in the vehicle. If the battery voltage is OK in the frozen values, this indicates that the problem cause is isolated to the parts of the voltage feed or grounding point that only affects Electronic throttle module (ETM). Check that the connector connections for Electronic throttle module (ETM) are OK and that there is voltage and ground connection for Electronic throttle module (ETM).
  2. If the counters shows that there has been a single occurrence of the problem before the last 25 driving cycles , or if the problem was generated when the engine speed was 0 rpm and battery voltage to Engine control module (ECM) was 8.9 V, then the vehicle may have stood with the ignition on for a longer time and the battery has been discharged. In this case, check that the battery and its charging status is OK.
  3. If the battery voltage has been low or high in both Engine control module (ECM) and Electronic throttle module (ETM), when the engine has been running, this may indicate damaged charging regulator or alternator. At too high battery voltage, it may be an external start aid with too high voltage that has been connected to the vehicle.

For markets where the upgraded software, released during 2006 or later, is available, the solution may be to load the upgraded software for the times when the customer has stood with the ignition on and drained the battery or if anyone has connected a starting aid, which have given too high voltage for a short time. Since the upgraded software requires that the engine is running and that the battery voltage is incorrect for more than 30 seconds, then it will prevent the diagnostic trouble code from being generated in these cases.

  1. Check that the connector connections for Electronic throttle module (ETM) are OK and that there is voltage and ground connection for Electronic throttle module (ETM). At ignition on, a beeping sound shall be heard from the throttle module for a short time, when it is supplied with voltage.
  2. Check that the battery voltage in the vehicle is normal and that the battery's charging status is OK. Also check that the battery cables and their connections to the vehicle are in good condition as well as that connections to the battery are installed correctly and not corroded.
  3. For markets where upgraded software, released during year 2006 or later, is available, the solution may be to download the upgraded software. Since detection time is increased from 0.13 to 10 seconds, the upgraded software is much more tolerant against brief intermittent interference.

Erase the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). If the problem still can be recreated, despite above actions, try with a new throttle module unit.

Tighten the 2 x nuts and the screws.

Connect the connector and install the tie strap.

Note. If the wiring was not behind the bracket for the starter motor, it must be secured along the cable duct by two tie straps.

Raise the car.

Remove the splashguard under the engine.

Tighten the 4 x screws for the throttle body.

Lower the car.

Install the charge air hose to the throttle body and tighten the clamp.

Install

  1. the dipstick tube

Using the parameters "Cruise control resume", "Cruise control SET-" and "Cruise control SET+" in VIDA vehicle communication, check whether the buttons work and indicate the correct values. If the buttons do not work properly, it indicates that the fault is permanent. Otherwise, it is an intermittent fault.

Signal too high. Permanent fault

Diagnostic trouble code ECM-928C, High signal, is stored if the engine control module (ECM) detects that the Cruise On and Resume buttons are active at the same time, which is infeasible due to the design of the cruise control stalk and buttons. The most likely cause is a problem with the cruise control stalk.

Remedy as necessary.

Signal too low. Permanent fault

Diagnostic trouble code ECM-928C, Low signal, is stored if the engine control module (ECM) detects that the SET- and SET+ buttons are active at the same time, which is infeasible due to the design of the cruise control stalk and buttons. The most likely cause is a problem with the cruise control stalk.

Remedy as necessary.

Signal missing. Permanent fault

Diagnostic trouble code ECM-928C, No signal, is stored if the engine control module (ECM) detects that any of the signals from the buttons are high (approx. 12 V) when the pulse should be low. Check the following cables for short circuit to supply voltage

  1. SET+ button, between engine control module (ECM) terminal #B19 and cruise control stalk terminal #5.
  2. SET- button, between engine control module (ECM) terminal #B34 and cruise control stalk terminal #4.
  3. Resume button, between engine control module (ECM) terminal #B20 and cruise control stalk terminal #3.
  4. ON/OFF button, between engine control module (ECM) terminal #B33 and cruise control stalk terminal #2.
  5. Feed (pulsed signal) between engine control module (ECM) terminal #B47 and cruise control stalk terminal #1.

The buttons are gauged with a pulsed signal from the control module, where the signal is high (approx. 12 V) for 0.004 seconds and low (approx. 0 V) for 0.016 seconds. This means a period time of 0.020 seconds (0.004 + 0.016 = 0.020). When one of the buttons is activated, the engine control module (ECM) receives the pulsed signal on the connection that corresponds to the activated button.

Intermittent fault

Read the diagnostic trouble code information for likely causes of the fault type.

Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is. The operating conditions can be, for example, whether the engine was running, what the speed of the vehicle was and what the battery voltage in the system was. If the trouble code was stored when battery voltage was low and engine speed was close to 0 rpm when the fault occurred, it could indicate that the fault arose when the vehicle was stationary with the ignition on for a long period, thereby draining the battery, or that the fault arose due to battery voltage becoming low when the customer started the engine.

For markets where upgraded software, released during year 2006 or later, is available, the solution may be to download the upgraded software. If the frozen values indicate that the diagnostic trouble code was generated due to low battery voltage during or just after engine start, new software is the solution. This is because the new software requires vehicle speed to be greater than 25 km/h (15 mph) for the test to be active.

If upgraded software is not available and the frozen values indicate that the fault occurred when battery voltage was low and engine speed was close to 0 rpm, fault tracing should focus on checking the vehicle's power supply, especially battery charge status.

HINT: Using VIDA vehicle communication, check that the parameters "Cruise control resume", "Cruise control SET-" and "Cruise control SET+" indicate the correct values. To aid fault tracing, use Component specifications when measuring and checking relevant components and use Wiring diagram, Signal description and Breakout box to measure and control signals to and front the control module or its components.

This information can facilitate searching for an intermittent fault. If the fault was stored at a battery voltage lower than 10 V with engine speed at 0 RPM, this indicates that the fault may have occurred when the engine was started. This, in turn, indicates that the battery's charging status is not OK.

HINT: Using VIDA vehicle communication, check that the parameter "Clutch pedal position" indicates correct values. There are other parameters that can be of help when fault tracing and verifying this diagnostic trouble code.
