Checking knocking
Abnormal knock may be due to any one of the following reasons (which are not listed in any particular fault-tracing order).
Oil contamination
If oil is sucked into the engine through the crankcase ventilation (due to a high oil level in the engine), combustion will be poor causing knocking.
Defective spark plugs/ignition cables
Can cause poor combustion causing knocking.
Defective distributor cap/rotor
Can cause poor combustion causing knocking.
Loose/defective knock sensors (KS)
Can transmit incorrect information about knocking to the engine control module (ECM).
Incorrect fuel
Can cause poor combustion causing knocking.
Extremely high engine coolant temperature (ECT)/intake air temperature (IAT)
Can cause poor combustion causing knocking.
Incorrectly adjusted camshafts
If the camshafts are not correctly set up the intake and exhaust times will be incorrect. Ignition advance will also be incorrect as the distributor is mounted at the rear of the camshaft. This can cause poor combustion causing knocking.
Mechanical knocking
Knocking may be due to worn mechanical components (for example excessive bearing play, excessive piston running clearance, valve rattle due to defective hydraulic lifters).
- Ignition off. Replace all spark plugs. NOTE: It is vital that the correct spark plugs are used, see parts catalogue for P/N. Check the spark gap of new plugs before they are fitted. Spark gap should be 0.7 - 0.8 mm. Reconnect all ignition cables.
Checking signal from AW 50-42
- Start the engine and idle it.
- Disconnect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) from the VIDA station and use it in stand-alone mode.
- Move the gear selector to position N and note the gear position displayed by the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
- Move the gear selector to position D and note the gear position displayed by the Volvo Scan Tool (ST). Compare the values in the chart below to continue fault-tracing. - Carefully remove the expansion tank cover. WARNING: Danger - coolant is hot.
- Clamp the hose between the radiator and thermostat housing using a hose clip and disconnect the hose from the thermostat housing.
- Insert sensor in thermostat housing and reinstall hose.
- Remove hose clip.
- Start engine and run up to operating temperature. The engine should be hot enough for the thermostat to open.
- Select Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to read off the engine coolant temperature (ECT). Check that the engine coolant temperature (ECT) is within its permitted range.

Open-circuit, intermittent faults
An open-circuit in a cable will be indicated by the loss of a function (or functions).
Chafed and broken leads are common causes of faults.
Checks
- Disconnect the connectors at both ends of the cable.

Connect an ohmmeter between the ends of the cable.
The ohmmeter should read approximately 0ohms if there is no open-circuit in the cable.
Shake the cable lightly and pull on connectors during measurement to locate the damage.
If the reading is not correct. Replace the cable and / or continue according to Contact resistance and oxidation .
Always check the control module and control module box connectors to ensure that their pins and sockets are not bent or damaged, this may cause faults.
Check pins and terminals particularly carefully.
Short-circuit to ground, intermittent faults
A short-circuit between a live cable and ground is often indicated by the loss of a function or a fuse blowing when a current is passed through the cable.
Checks

- Disconnect the connectors in the circuit to ensure that they do not affect readings.

Checks

The voltmeter reading depends on the circuit being tested and the positions of switches and sensors. Use the wiring diagram to determine the correct voltage in the circuit.

The ohmmeter should read infinite resistance between cables not connected to each other in the circuit.
Shake the cable lightly and pull on connectors during measurement to locate the damage.
If the reading is not correct. Replace the cable and / or continue according to Contact resistance and oxidation .

Loose connections in terminals may be caused by oxidation of the pins and sockets, or by a faulty connection of a cable to its cable terminal.
Loose connections produce the same faults as an intermittent open-circuit in a cable.
Checks
- Inspect terminals visually according to «Inspect terminals visually»(ref-408435-S34108999952011071200000) . Continue according to «Contact resistance and oxidation»(ref-408435-S41703021522011071200000) .
Contact resistance and oxidation
In theory, the resistance across contacts, leads and terminals should be 0 ohms. However, there is always some resistance due to terminal oxidation.
If resistance is too great there will be function problems. The magnitude of the resistance before it causes a malfunction depends on the circuit load. A guideline would be a few ohms.
Cleaning female socket terminals and male pin terminals

Note. Do not apply rust solvent spray or grease to the catalyst monitor sensor or instrument cluster connectors.
- Ignition off
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal
- Use compressed air to clean the disconnected connector
- Apply rust solvent spray 1161422 to the disconnected connectors
- Blow clean using compressed air.
Greasing female terminals

Note. Do not fill the protective cover with grease.
- Press grease, P/N 1161417-9, into the terminals directly from the tube
- Check that all the cavities in the connectors are filled
- Use a loose male pin to ensure that contact in sockets is good. The pin should remain in position when pulled gently.

Check terminals visually
Note. When checking the engine control module (ECM), do not remove the control module from the car before the main relay has interrupted the power supply. This may take up to 4 minutes after the ignition has been switched off and the engine cooling fan (FC) has stopped running.
Inspect the terminals visually when checking, or taking readings from, opened connectors.
Checks
- Check for oxidation. This can cause poor connections in the terminals
- Check for damage to pins and terminals. Check that they are properly inserted into the connector. Check that the cable is properly connected to the pin or terminal. Check pins and terminals particularly carefully
- Use a separate male terminal to check the female terminal. Check that they are secure: Pull on the pin.
Open-circuit, permanent faults
An open-circuit in a cable is indicated by a loss of one or more functions.
Chafed and broken cables or terminals that have come loose are common causes of faults in electrical systems.
Checks
- Disconnect the connectors at both ends of the cable.
Connect an ohmmeter between the ends of the cable.
The ohmmeter should read approximately 0 ohms if there is no open-circuit in the cable.
Always check the control module and control module box connectors to ensure that their pins and sockets are not bent or damaged, as this can cause faults.
Check pins and terminals particularly for this fault. See Check terminals visually .
Short-circuit to ground, permanent faults
A short-circuit between a live cable and ground is often indicated by the loss of a function or a fuse blowing when a current is passed through the cable.
Checks
- Activate all switches and sensors in the circuit. Check whether the fuse blows
- Disconnect the connectors in the circuit to ensure that they do not affect readings.
Use an ohmmeter to take a resistance reading between the cable and ground.
The ohmmeter should read infinite resistance if no components are connected.
Check pins and terminals particularly for this fault. See Check terminals visually .
Short-circuit to supply voltage. Permanent faults
A short-circuit between a cable and supply voltage is often indicated by the loss of a function or a fuse blowing when voltage is passed through the cable.
Checks
- Use a voltmeter to take readings at various points in the circuit while operating switches and sensors.
Voltmeter readings will depend on which circuit is tested and the status of switches and sensors. Use the wiring diagram to determine the correct voltage in the circuit.
Use an ohmmeter between the suspect cables to detect short-circuits between them.
The ohmmeter should read infinite resistance between cables not connected to each other in the circuit.

- Wait 2 minutes after the ignition has been switched off. The main relay must be voltage free before the control module is removed from the car. If the engine cooling fan (FC) runs on after the ignition has been switched off, wait until it stops and then wait for a further 2 minutes
- Remove the cover over the control module box. Put the cover to one side. NOTE: Do not touch the control module terminal pins with your fingers. Static electricity may damage components in the control module.
- Insert tool «9995722»(ref-403953-S10522720692011061000000) around the control module
- Move the upper section of the tool backwards as far as it will go. Pull up the tool
- Carefully pull up the control module.

- Check that no pins or sockets are damaged on the connector
- Gently press adapter «9511504»(ref-403953-S20513889072011061000000) down into the grooves inside the control module box. Press to the limit position.
- Insert tool «9995722»(ref-403953-S10522720692011061000000) around the adapter
- Move the upper section of the tool forwards as far as it will go. Pull the tool up.

- Check the control module and control module connectors to ensure that the male and female terminals are undamaged and secure (cannot be pressed in). Check that the cables to the female terminals are secured to the terminal pins
- Connect adapter «9511504»(ref-403953-S20513889072011061000000) to the control module connector (wiring side). Connect breakout box «9511428»(ref-403953-S35709646712011061000000) to the adapter via wiring «9511499»(ref-403953-S17823813432011061000000)
- The breakout box is designed to facilitate reading off the control module input and output signals when the control module is connected; and the cable and component resistance when the control module is disconnected. The use of a breakout box reduces the risk of accidental short-circuits and damage to the connector pins.
