X 12 XE Engine
The X 12 XE DOHC petrol engine is based on the X 10 XE DOHC petrol engine familiar from the Corsa-B and described in "New Technical Features MY '97 1/2". The X 12 XE is also installed in the Astra-G.
The main difference between both engines is the number of cylinders. The X 10 XE is a 3-cylinder in-line and the X 12 XE is a 4-cylinder in-line engine.
The most important features of the X 10 XE/X 12 XE engines are:
- DOHC three-/four-cylinder 12/16-valve ECOTEC engine
- compact dimensions, lightweight construction
- valve actuation via 2 hollow-cast camshafts and low-friction roller cam followers
- maintenance-free micro-hydraulic valve lifters
- engine timing via maintenance-free timing chain
- timing case with integrated oil and coolant pump
- 3-way catalytic converter in engine proximity
- composite-construction engine control unit
- ignition module with single ignition coils and integrated spark plug connectors
- hot film mass air flow meter with reverse-current recognition
- camshaft sensor with phase sensor disc for rapid recognition of camshaft angle setting for start phase optimised for minimum exhaust emissions
- drive for coolant pump and auxiliary aggregates via maintenance-free ribbed V-belt
- constructive design geared to environmentally friendly maintenance with emphasis on recycling and ease of service, e.g. oil filter inserts in the form of recyclable paper cartridges
- provisions for further reduction of exhaust emissions (EU level 3)
