C 16 XE Engine (4 Cylinder DOHC Engine)

General

The GSi uses the newly developed C 16 XE engine.

This is a 1.6 litre engine with 16 valves and two overhead camshafts (DOHC).

The new Multec-S combined ignition and injection system is used.

This engine is based on the family I engine with the following modifications:

Cylinder head

- Aluminium cylinder head with 2 overhead camshafts

- Spark plugs positioned centrally with water duct around spark plug boss

­ Dual ignition coil mounting

- Valve angle 43°

- Valve diameter: intake 30.5 mm; exhaust 27.5 mm

- Hydraulic valve lifters, Æ32 mm

- Cylinder head bolts, external torx M 10 x 1.25

- Camshaft sensor

- Cylinder head cover with integrated dual circuit blow-by system

- Cast dual exhaust manifold with thread for oxygen sensor

- Spark plug change interval only every 4 years / 60,000 km / 37,000 miles

Crank drive

- Toothed belt pulley fastened to crankshaft with torx bolt

- Pot flywheel fastened to crankshaft with 7 bolts

- Oil pan made out of aluminium

Engine management system

The engine management system in the C 16 XE engine is the new Multec-S with:

- Sequential fuel injection

- Cylinder-selective knock control

- DIS (Direct Ignition System)

- Twin jet injection valves
