Piston Rings, Replace
Remove piston - see operation "Piston with Con-Rod, Remove and Install". Remove piston rings with piston ring pliers (illus. I). Remove carbon deposit out of groove with piston ring that has been broken in two and ground to a wedge shape.
Clamp piston ring in cylinder and measure gap with feeler gauge (illus. II). See "Technical Data" for piston ring sizes and permissible piston ring gaps.
Install piston rings (illus. III). Second piston ring with "TOP" identification uppermost.
Piston ring gaps:
First piston ring (rectangular ring) in position 1. Second piston ring (tapered compression ring) with "TOP" identification uppermost in position 4. Intermediate ring of oil scraper ring in position 5. Steel band ring of oil scraper ring in position 2 or 3.
Note installation position of piston (6) and con-rods. The arrow on bottom of piston (7) points to engine timing side.
The bead (1) on the con-rod points to transmission side.
