Timing Case
The following components are attached to the timing case of the X 10 XE engine:
- Front view
- Rear view (inside, lower part)
- Camshaft sensor
- Coolant pump with integrated temperature sensor and thermostat housing
- TDC point mark (1st cylinder)
- Oil pump
- Oil pressure regulating valve
- Service aperture for chain tensioner
The individual components are described in detail in the following sections.
5.2.2 Timing Case
Timing Chain
The two camshafts are driven by a simplex timing chain powered by the crankshaft. The correct chain tension is provided by a spring-assisted, hydraulic, maintenance-free chain tensioner. The timing chain is guided by a tension rail and an additional guide rail. A sliding rail guides the chain between the camshaft sprockets. With the exception of the upper section (camshaft sprockets), the chain drive is accommodated completely in the timing case.
| Number of teeth and links: | |
|---|---|
| Sleeve-type chain | 130 links |
| 2 camshaft sprockets | 40 teeth each |
| Crankshaft sprocket | 20 teeth |

5.2.3 Timing Chain
Chain Tensioner
The spring-assisted, hydraulic chain tensioner is positioned under the timing case, bolted to the cylinder head. It is accessible by removing the cylinder head or the timing case.
