Intake System (Intake Manifold)
To satisfy the demand for high torque and regular torque progression, even at low engine speeds (low end torque characteristic), long intake routes are required for the new C 16 XE engine.
For the first time, a two-part intake manifold is used, the lower part made of aluminium alloy and the upper part of glass-fibre reinforced plastic.
The intake manifold runs over the reverse side of the cylinder head and protrudes from it somewhat.
The throttle body, located on the left side of the cylinder head and the hot film mass air flow meter, on the right side of the engine, are also connected by a plastic pipe which runs along the reverse side of the engine. This provides long intake routes while taking up little space.
The advantages of the plastic pipe are high strength at low weight and a very smooth surface, which lead to good engine charging.
A special elastomer gasket is used at the contact point of the two-part intake manifold, which can be separated for Service work. This gasket also seals all four intake channels at the same time.
The aluminium lower part and the glass-fibre reinforced plastic upper part are bolted together.
