DTC P1389: NO ASD RELAY OUTPUT VOLTAGE AT PCM Dodge Durango I

Note. For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.

Note. Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay output voltage is monitored when ignition is on, battery voltage is more than 10.4 volts and engine speed is more than 400 RPM. DTC may be stored if Powertrain Control Module (PCM) senses no voltage when ASD relay is energized. Possible causes are: defective ASD relay, defective PCM, or defective connectors or wiring.

  1. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is displayed and equal to zero, go to next step. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is not displayed and equal to zero, go to step 9.
  2. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts, go to next step. If engine does not start, go to step 5.
  3. Ensure ignition is off. Remove ASD relay from power distribution center at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, near battery. (Схема №54) Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel.
  4. Note cavities in power distribution center for ASD relay. (Схема №54) Using ohmmeter, check resistance between cavity No. 87 (Dark Green/Orange wire) in power distribution center for ASD relay and terminal No. 12 (Dark Green/Orange wire) on PCM connector C3. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-2»(ref-9482-S03161005942000102700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Dark Green/Orange wire between PCM, joint connector No. 2 and cavity No. 87 in power distribution center for ASD relay. Joint connector No. 2 is located in power distribution. (Схема №54) Perform «TEST VER-2»(ref-9482-S03161005942000102700000).
  5. Turn ignition off. Remove ASD relay from power distribution center at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, near battery. (Схема №54) Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel.
  6. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  7. Ensure ASD relay is removed from power distribution center. Using 12-volt test light, check for voltage at cavity No. 30 (Gray wire) in power distribution center for ASD relay. (Схема №54) If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does on illuminate, repair open between battery, fuse No. 3 (30-amp) and Gray wire between fuse No. 3 in power distribution center and cavity No. 30 in power distribution center for ASD relay. Perform «TEST VER-2»(ref-9482-S03161005942000102700000).
  8. Ensure ignition is off. Install a substitute ASD relay. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts, replace original ASD relay. Perform «TEST VER-2»(ref-9482-S03161005942000102700000). If engine still fails to start, problem is not in the ASD relay output circuit to PCM. Check for other possible problems that may cause a no start condition.
  9. At this time, conditions for ASD relay control circuit malfunction does not exist. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Wiggle wiring harness and connectors between ASD relay and PCM while noting DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter. ASD relay is located in power distribution center at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, near battery. (Схема №54) PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter does not change to zero, go to next step. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter changes to zero, repair wiring or connectors between ASD relay and PCM as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-2»(ref-9482-S03161005942000102700000).
  10. Shut engine off. Ensure ignition is off. Inspect PCM connectors and ASD relay connector in power distribution center for corroded, pushed out or damaged terminals. Inspect wiring harness between PCM and ASD relay any possible intermittent problems. Also, check for related Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If terminals are not corroded, pushed out or damaged and wiring harness is okay, test is complete. If terminals are corroded, pushed out or damaged, or wiring harness is damaged, repair as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-2»(ref-9482-S03161005942000102700000).
