Note. Catalytic converter efficiency is monitored after engine is at 147°F (64°C), throttle has been open for 180 seconds, vehicle speed is more 20 MPH with engine at 1200-1700 RPM and Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor vacuum is 15-20 in. Hg. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) if catalytic converter efficiency deteriorates and switching rate of downstream oxygen sensor become nearly the same as upstream oxygen sensor. If at any point during the test, if the switch rate reaches a predetermined value, a counter is incremented by one. Possible causes are: engine mechanical problem, exhaust leak, defective catalytic converter or upstream oxygen sensor is older than downstream oxygen sensor.
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is not displayed and equal to zero, go to next step. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is displayed and equal to zero, go to step 3 .
- At this time, conditions for catalytic converter efficiency failure does not exist or is an intermittent problem. Using scan tool, read FREEZE FRAME data while attempting to duplicate the condition that caused DTC to be set by paying special attention to the conditions that catalytic converter efficiency failure is monitored. Catalytic converter efficiency is monitored after engine is at 147°F (64°C), throttle has been open for 180 seconds, vehicle speed is more than 20 MPH with engine at 1200-1700 RPM and MAP sensor vacuum is 15-20 in. Hg. Recheck for DTCs. If DTC P0432: 2/1 CATALYTIC CONVERTER EFFICIENCY exists, go to next step. If DTC P0432: 2/1 CATALYTIC CONVERTER EFFICIENCY does not exist, condition no longer exists. Test is complete.
- Start engine and allow engine to idle. Check exhaust for excessive smoke caused by coolant entering combustion chambers or high oil consumption. If excessive smoke caused by coolant entering combustion chambers or high oil consumption does not exist, go to next step. If excessive smoke caused by coolant entering combustion chambers or high oil consumption exists, repair engine as necessary and replace catalytic converter. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000) .
- Check for exhaust leaks between engine and appropriate downstream oxygen sensor. On 4.7L Calif. emission vehicles, 2 downstream oxygen sensors are used and may be referred to as 1/2 oxygen sensor and 2/2 oxygen sensor. The 1/2 oxygen sensor is located on driver's side exhaust pipe, just below small catalytic converter and 2/2 oxygen sensor is located on passenger's side exhaust pipe, just below small catalytic converter. On 4.7L except Calif. emission vehicles, 5.2L and 5.9L, one downstream oxygen sensor is used and may be referred to as 1/2 oxygen sensor. The 1/2 oxygen sensor is located on exhaust pipe behind catalytic converter. On all models, if no exhaust leaks exist, go to next step. If exhaust leaks exist, repair as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000) .
- Determine if downstream oxygen sensor has been replaced without replacing upstream oxygen sensor, as a newly installed downstream oxygen sensor with an existing aging upstream oxygen sensor may cause DTC to be set. On 4.7L Calif. emission vehicles, 2 upstream oxygen sensors are used and may be referred to as 1/1 oxygen sensor and 2/1 oxygen sensor. The 1/1 oxygen sensor is located on driver's side exhaust pipe, just below exhaust manifold and in front of small catalytic converter. The 2/1 oxygen sensor is located on passenger's side exhaust pipe, just below exhaust manifold and in front of small catalytic converter. On 4.7L except Calif. emission vehicles, 5.2L and 5.9L, one upstream oxygen sensor is used and may be referred to as 1/1 oxygen sensor. The 1/1 upstream oxygen sensor is located on exhaust pipe in front of catalytic converter. On all models, if downstream oxygen sensor has been replaced without replacing upstream oxygen sensor, replace upstream oxygen sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000) . If downstream oxygen sensor has not been replaced without replacing upstream oxygen sensor, replace catalytic converter. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000) .
