Note. Ignition coil No. 7 primary circuit is monitored when battery voltage is more than 8 volts during engine cranking or 12 volts with engine running and engine speed less than 2016 RPM with none of ignition coils in dwell when they are checked. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when peak current is not achieved within 1.5 milliseconds of the dwell. It may take 3 seconds during cranking or up to 6 seconds while engine is running for DTC to be stored. Possible causes are: defective Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay circuit, defective ignition coil, defective PCM, or defective connectors or wiring.
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is displayed and equal to zero, go to next step. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is not displayed and equal to zero, go to step 7.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ignition coil No. 7 connector. Ignition system uses ignition coil on plug with ignition coils mounted on cylinder head above each spark plug. Ignition coil No. 7 is the fourth ignition coil back from front of driver's side of engine. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between electrical terminals on ignition coil No. 7. This will check the ignition coil primary resistance. Ignition coil primary resistance should be.6-.9 ohms at 70-80°F (21-27°C). If ignition coil primary resistance is within specification, go to next step. If ignition coil primary resistance is not within specification, replace ignition coil No. 7. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Ensure ignition coil No. 7 connector is still disconnected. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate ignition coil No. 7. Using 12-volt test light, check for voltage at terminal No. 2 (Dark Green/Orange wire) on ignition coil No. 7 connector. If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, repair open or high resistance on Dark Green/Orange wire from ASD relay, through joint connector No. 2 and to ignition coil No. 7. ASD relay and joint connector No. 2 are located in power distribution center at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, near battery. - Stop actuation of ignition coil No. 7. Turn ignition off. Reinstall ignition coil No. 7 connector. Using 12-volt test light connected to battery voltage, backprobe terminal No. 1 (Dark Blue/Tan wire) on ignition coil No. 7 connector. Start engine and note test light operation. If test light does not flash on and off, shut engine off. Go to next step. If test light flashes on and off, test is complete.
- Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect ignition coil No. 7 connector and PCM connectors. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 1 (Dark Blue/Tan wire) on ignition coil No. 7 connector and terminal No. 7 (Dark Blue/Tan wire) on PCM connector C2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Dark Blue/Tan wire between ignition coil No. 7 and PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Ensure ignition coil No. 7 connector and PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 1 (Dark Blue/Tan wire) on ignition coil No. 7 connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Dark Blue/Tan wire between ignition coil No. 7 and PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- At this time, conditions for ignition coil No. 7 primary circuit malfunction does not exist. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Wiggle wiring harness and connectors between PCM and ignition coil No. 7 while noting DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Ignition system uses ignition coil on plug with ignition coils mounted on cylinder head above each spark plug. Ignition coil No. 7 is the fourth ignition coil back from front of driver's side of engine. If engine does not misfire or stall while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, and DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter does not change to zero, go to next step. If engine misfires or stalls while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, or DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter changes to zero, repair wiring or connectors between PCM and ignition coil No. 7 as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Shut engine off. Ensure ignition is off. Inspect wiring harness and connectors between PCM and ignition coil No. 7. If no problems exist, go to next step. If any problems exist, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Using scan tool, read FREEZE FRAME data and attempt to duplicate the conditions when DTC was set. Inspect PCM connectors and ignition coil No. 7 connector for corroded, pushed out or damaged terminals. Inspect wiring harness between PCM and ignition coil No. 7 for any possible intermittent problems. Also, check for related Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If terminals are not corroded, pushed out or damaged and wiring harness is okay, test is complete. If terminals are corroded, pushed out or damaged, or wiring harness is damaged, repair as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
