DTC P0118: ECT SENSOR VOLTAGE TOO HIGH Dodge Durango I

Note. Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor voltage is monitored when ignition is on and battery voltage is more than 10.4 volts. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when ECT sensor voltage at PCM is more than 4.98 volts for more than 3 seconds. Possible causes are: defective ECT sensor, defective PCM, or defective connectors or wiring.

  1. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is displayed and equal to zero, go to next step. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is not displayed and equal to zero, go to step 6.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor connector. On 4.7L, ECT sensor is located near front of intake manifold and contains Black/Light Blue wire and Tan/Black wire in the connector. (Схема №36) On 5.2L and 5.9L, ECT sensor is located near thermostat housing on intake manifold and contains Black/Light Blue wire and Tan/Black wire in the connector. On all models, start engine and allow engine to idle. Using voltmeter, check voltage at terminal No. 2 (Tan/Black wire) on ECT sensor connector. If voltage is 5.5 volts or less, go to next step. If voltage is more than 5.5 volts, repair short to voltage on Tan/Black wire between ECT sensor and PCM. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  3. Shut engine off. Ensure ECT sensor connector is still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 1 (Black/Light Blue wire) on ECT sensor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Black/Light Blue wire between ECT sensor and PCM. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  4. Ensure ignition is off and ECT sensor connector is still disconnected. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 2 (Tan/Black wire) on ECT sensor connector and terminal No. 16 (Tan/Black wire) on PCM connector C1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Tan/Black wire between ECT sensor and PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  5. Ensure ignition is off. Reinstall PCM connectors. Ensure ECT sensor is still disconnected. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool in SENSORS mode, read ENG COOLANT TMP VLT while connecting jumper wire between terminals No. 1 (Black/Light Blue wire) and No. 2 (Tan/Black wire) on ECT sensor connector. This is the ECT sensor voltage. If ECT sensor voltage changes from more than 4.5 volts to less than one volt, replace ECT sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If ECT sensor voltage does not change from more than 4.5 volts to less than one volt, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  6. Turn ignition off. Inspect wiring harness and connectors between ECT sensor and PCM. On 4.7L, ECT sensor is located near front of intake manifold and contains Black/Light Blue wire and Tan/Black wire in the connector. (Схема №36) On 5.2L and 5.9L, ECT sensor is located near thermostat housing on intake manifold and contains Black/Light Blue wire and Tan/Black wire in the connector. On all models, PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Inspect ECT sensor connector and PCM connectors for corroded, pushed out, miswired or damaged terminals. Also, check for related Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If no problems and no related TSBs exist, go to next step. If any problems exist, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  7. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Wiggle wiring harness and connectors between PCM and ECT sensor while noting DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter does not change to zero while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, test is complete. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter changes to zero while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
