DTC P0505: IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR CIRCUITS Dodge Durango I

Note. Idle air control motor circuits are monitored when ignition is on and battery voltage is more than 11.5 volts. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when PCM senses a short to ground or battery voltage for 100 milliseconds on any of idle air control motor driver circuits while idle air control motor is operating. Possible causes are: defective idle air control motor, or defective connectors or wiring.

  1. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is displayed and equal to zero, go to next step. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is not displayed and equal to zero, go to step 8.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect idle air control motor connector. Idle air control motor is mounted on throttle body and contains a 4-pin connector. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Using ohmmeter, check resistance on each idle air control motor driver circuit between proper terminals on idle air control motor connector and PCM connector. See «IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR DRIVER CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION»(ref-9482-S02821835512000102700000) table. If resistance is less than 5 ohms on all idle air control motor driver circuits, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more on any idle air control motor driver circuit, repair open on air control motor driver circuit. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).   3. Ensure idle air control motor connector and PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and each idle air control motor driver circuit at PCM connector. See «IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR DRIVER CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION»(ref-9482-S02821835512000102700000) table. If resistance is 5 ohms or more on all idle air control motor driver circuits, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms on any idle air control motor driver circuit, repair short to ground on air control motor driver circuit. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  4. Ensure idle air control motor connector and PCM connectors are still disconnected. Ensure ignition is off. Remove Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay from power distribution center at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, near battery. (Схема №45)
  5. Note cavities in power distribution center for ASD relay. (Схема №45) Connect jumper wire between cavities No. 30 (Gray wire) and 87 (Dark Green/Orange wire) in power distribution center for ASD relay. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using voltmeter, check for voltage each idle air control motor driver circuit at PCM connector. See «IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR DRIVER CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION»(ref-9482-S02821835512000102700000) table. If voltage is one volt or less on all idle air control motor driver circuits, turn ignition off. Remove jumper wire and reinstall ASD relay. Go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt on any idle air control motor driver circuit, turn ignition off, remove jumper wire. Reinstall ASD relay and reconnect PCM connectors. Repair short to voltage on air control motor driver circuit. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  6. Turn ignition off. Ensure idle air control motor connector is still disconnected. Reinstall PCM connectors. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate IAC STEPPER MOTOR to operate the idle air control motor. Using 12-volt test light connected to ground, check for voltage at each idle air control motor driver circuit at idle air control motor connector for at least 10 seconds. See «IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR DRIVER CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION»(ref-9482-S02821835512000102700000) table. Test light should flash on and off rapidly when idle air control motor is actuated. If test light flashes on and off rapidly on all idle air control motor driver circuits, stop actuation of idle air control motor. Go to next step. If test light does not flash on and off rapidly on any idle air control motor driver circuit, stop actuation of idle air control motor. Replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  7. Ensure idle air control motor connector is still actuated. Using 12-volt test light connected to battery voltage, check for voltage at each idle air control motor driver circuit at idle air control motor connector for at least 10 seconds. See «IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR DRIVER CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION»(ref-9482-S02821835512000102700000) table. Test light should flash on and off rapidly when idle air control motor is actuated. If test light flashes on and off rapidly on all idle air control motor driver circuits, stop actuation of idle air control motor. Replace idle air control motor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If test light does not flash on and off rapidly on any idle air control motor driver circuit, stop actuation of idle air control motor. Replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  8. Ensure ignition is on with engine off. Using scan tool, check to see if DTC matches FREEZE FRAME DTC. If DTC matches FREEZE FRAME DTC, go to next step. If DTC does not match FREEZE FRAME DTC, perform repair procedures for FREEZE FRAME DTC and then perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  9. Ensure ignition is on with engine off. Using scan tool, read FREEZE FRAME data to determine when DTC was stored. Attempt to duplicate conditions recorded in FREEZE FRAME data while noting DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter changes to zero, go to next step. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter does not change to zero, go to step 25.
  10. Turn ignition off. Disconnect idle air control motor connector. Idle air control motor is mounted on throttle body and contains a 4-pin connector. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 1 (Gray/Red wire) on idle air control motor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Gray/Red wire between idle air control motor and PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  11. Ensure idle air control motor connector and PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Yellow/Black wire) on idle air control motor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Yellow/Black wire between idle air control motor and PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  12. Ensure idle air control motor connector and PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 3 (Brown/White wire) on idle air control motor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Brown/White wire between idle air control motor and PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  13. Ensure idle air control motor connector and PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 4 (Violet/Black wire) on idle air control motor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Violet/Black wire between idle air control motor and PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  14. Ensure ignition is off and idle air control motor connector is still disconnected. Reinstall PCM connectors. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Using voltmeter, check voltage at terminal No. 1 (Gray/Red wire) on idle air control motor connector. If voltage is more than 5 volts at any time, go to next step. If voltage is not more than 5 volts at any time, go to step 24.
  15. With engine idling, using voltmeter, check voltage at terminal No. 2 (Yellow/Black wire) on idle air control motor connector. If voltage is more than 5 volts at any time, go to next step. If voltage is not more than 5 volts at any time, go to step 23.
  16. With engine idling, using voltmeter, check voltage at terminal No. 3 (Brown/White wire) on idle air control motor connector. If voltage is more than 5 volts at any time, go to next step. If voltage is not more than 5 volts at any time, go to step 22.
  17. With engine idling, using voltmeter, check voltage at terminal No. 4 (Violet/Black wire) on idle air control motor connector. If voltage is more than 5 volts at any time, go to next step. If voltage is not more than 5 volts at any time, go to step 21.
  18. Shut engine off. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect PCM connectors. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 1 (Gray/Red wire) on idle air control motor connector and each remaining terminal on idle air control motor connector. This checks for short between No. 1 idle air control motor driver circuit and each remaining idle air control motor driver circuit. If resistance is 5 ohms or more on all idle air control motor driver circuits, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms on any idle air control motor driver circuit, repair idle air control motor driver circuits that are shorted together. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  19. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 2 (Yellow/Black wire) and terminals No. 3 (Brown/White wire) and No. 4 (Violet/Black wire) on idle air control motor connector. This checks for short between No. 2 idle air control motor driver circuit and No. 3 and 4 idle air control motor driver circuits. If resistance is 5 ohms or more on idle air control motor driver circuits, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms on any idle air control motor driver circuit, repair idle air control motor driver circuits that are shorted together. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  20. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminals No. 3 (Brown/White wire) and No. 4 (Violet/Black wire) on idle air control motor connector. This checks for short between No. 3 and 4 idle air control motor driver circuits. If resistance is 5 ohms or more on idle air control motor driver circuits, replace idle air control motor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If resistance is less than 5 ohms on any idle air control motor driver circuit, repair idle air control motor driver circuits that are shorted together. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  21. Shut engine off. Ensure ignition is off and idle air control motor connector is still disconnected. Disconnect PCM connectors. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 4 (Violet/Black wire) on idle air control motor connector and terminal No. 20 (Violet/Black wire) on PCM connector C1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Violet/Black wire between idle air control motor driver and PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  22. Shut engine off. Ensure ignition is off and idle air control motor connector is still disconnected. Disconnect PCM connectors. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 3 (Brown/White wire) on idle air control motor connector and terminal No. 11 (Brown/White wire) on PCM connector C1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Brown/White wire between idle air control motor driver and PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  23. Shut engine off. Ensure ignition is off and idle air control motor connector is still disconnected. Disconnect PCM connectors. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 2 (Yellow/Black wire) on idle air control motor connector and terminal No. 10 (Yellow/Black wire) on PCM connector C1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Yellow/Black wire between idle air control motor driver and PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  24. Shut engine off. Ensure ignition is off and idle air control motor connector is still disconnected. Disconnect PCM connectors. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 1 (Gray/Red wire) on idle air control motor connector and terminal No. 19 (Gray/Red wire) on PCM connector C1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Gray/Red wire between idle air control motor driver and PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  25. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Using scan tool in SYSTEM TESTS, perform IAC WIGGLE test. Wiggle wiring harness and connectors between idle air control motor and PCM while observing operation of idle air control motor. Idle air control motor is mounted on throttle body and contains a 4-pin connector. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. If idle air control motor does not stop operating while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, test is complete. If idle air control motor stops operating while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
