Note. Target idle is monitored when engine is idling and transmission is in Drive. No DTCs must exist for Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor or Throttle Position (TP) sensor in order to properly monitor target idle. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) if engine idle speed is not within 200 RPM more than target idle or is 100 RPM less than target idle for 14 seconds. Condition must exist 2 consecutive times in a row for DTC to be stored in PCM. Possible causes are: DTC does not match FREEZE FRAME DTC, vacuum leak, throttle plate or linkage binding, dirty throttle body or defective throttle body.
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is not displayed and equal to zero, go to next step. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is displayed and equal to zero. Go to step 4 .
- Ensure ignition is on with engine off. Using scan tool, check to see if DTC matches FREEZE FRAME DTC. If DTC matches FREEZE FRAME DTC, go to next step. If DTC does not match FREEZE FRAME DTC, perform repair procedures for FREEZE FRAME DTC and then perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000) .
- Ensure ignition is on with engine off. Using scan tool, read FREEZE FRAME data to determine when DTC was stored. Attempt to duplicate conditions recorded in FREEZE FRAME data while noting DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter changes to zero, go to next step. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter does not change to zero, conditions required to set DTC do not exist at this time. Operate vehicle for one specific good trip and clear any DTCs from PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000) .
- With engine off, check throttle linkage and throttle plate in throttle body for binding condition. With throttle linkage at idle position, ensure throttle plate is fully closed. If no binding condition exists and throttle plate fully closes, go to next step. If binding condition exists or throttle plate does not fully close, repair as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000) .
- Start engine and allow engine to idle for at least 60 seconds. Using scan tool, read target idle and engine RPM. If engine RPM is within 100 RPM of target idle, shut engine off. Go to next step. If engine RPM is not within 100 RPM of target idle, go to step 9 .
- Inspect wiring harness and connectors between PCM and idle air control motor. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Idle air control motor is mounted on throttle body and contains a 4-pin connector. If no problems exist, go to next step. If any problems exist, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000) .
- Start engine and allow engine to idle. Using scan tool in SYSTEM TESTS, perform IAC WIGGLE test. Engine speed should increase and decrease in accordance with display on scan tool. If engine speed operates correctly, stop IAC WIGGLE test and go to next step. If engine speed does not operate correctly, check for proper idle air control motor operation. See «DTC P0505: IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR CIRCUITS»(ref-9482-S14862711722000102700000) .
- With engine idling, using scan tool in SYSTEM TESTS, perform IAC WIGGLE test while wiggling wiring harness and connectors between idle air control motor and PCM. If idle air control motor does not stop operating while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, test is complete. If idle air control motor stops operating while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, repair wiring or connectors as necessary that caused idle air control motor to stop operating. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000) .
- Check engine vacuum hoses, brake booster, intake manifold and components for vacuum leaks. Ensure proper PCV valve is installed and PCV valve is operating correctly. On 4.7L, PCV valve is located on oil filler tube. On 5.2L and 5.9L, PCV valve is located on top of valve cover. On all models, if no vacuum leaks exist, correct PCV valve is used and PCV valve is operating correctly, go to next step. If vacuum leaks exist, incorrect PCV valve is used or PCV valve is not operating correctly, repair as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000) .
- With engine idling, using scan tool in SYSTEM TESTS, perform IAC WIGGLE test. Engine speed should increase and decrease in accordance with display on scan tool. If engine speed operates correctly, stop IAC WIGGLE test. Shut engine off and go to next step. If engine speed does not operate correctly, check for proper idle air control motor operation. - Remove throttle body. With throttle fully open on throttle body, clean throttle body with parts cleaner. Using soft brush or pad, ensure throttle body bore and throttle plate are clean. Dry throttle body with compressed air. Reinstall throttle body. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Ensure all accessories are off. Using scan tool in SYSTEM TESTS, perform minimum airflow and note engine speed. Minimum airflow may also be referred to as throttle body minimum airflow. If engine speed is less than 550 RPM, replace throttle body. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000) . If engine speed is 550 RPM or more, throttle body is operating properly. Test is complete.
