DTC P0551: POWER STEERING SWITCH FAILURE Dodge Durango I

Note. Test applies only to 4.7L. For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.

Note. Power steering switch is referred to as power steering pressure switch in test procedures. Power steering pressure switch failure is monitored when engine is running. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when PCM senses power steering pressure switch remains open for over 30 seconds with vehicle at more than 40 MPH. Possible causes are: defective power steering pressure switch, defective PCM, or defective connectors or wiring. .

Scheme 53

1. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is displayed and equal to zero, go to next step. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is not displayed and equal to zero, go to step 6.
2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect power steering pressure switch connector. Power steering pressure switch is located in pressure line near power steering pump. (Scheme 53) Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 1 (Black wire) on power steering pressure switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Black wire between power steering pressure switch and ground connection. Ground connection is located near front of passenger's side of engine, below A/C compressor. Perform «TEST VER-2»(ref-9482-S03161005942000102700000).
3. Ensure power steering pressure switch connector is still disconnected. Turn ignition on with engine off. Connect jumper wire to terminal No. 2 (Dark Blue/Orange wire) on power steering pressure switch connector. Using scan tool, monitor power steering pressure switch status while momentarily touching other end of jumper wire to terminal No. 1 (Black wire) on power steering pressure switch connector several times. If power steering pressure switch status does not change from high to low, turn ignition off and remove jumper wire. Go to next step. If power steering pressure switch status changes from high to low, turn ignition off and remove jumper wire. Replace power steering pressure switch. Perform «TEST VER-2»(ref-9482-S03161005942000102700000).
4. Ensure ignition is off and power steering pressure switch connector is still disconnected. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 12 (Dark Blue/Orange wire) on PCM connector C1. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Dark Blue/Orange wire between power steering pressure switch and PCM. Perform «TEST VER-2»(ref-9482-S03161005942000102700000).
5. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 12 (Dark Blue/Orange wire) on PCM connector C1 and terminal No. 2 (Dark Blue/Orange wire) on power steering pressure switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-2»(ref-9482-S03161005942000102700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Dark Blue/Orange wire between power steering pressure switch and PCM. Perform «TEST VER-2»(ref-9482-S03161005942000102700000).
6. Turn ignition off. Inspect wiring harness and connectors between PCM and power steering pressure switch. Power steering pressure switch is located in pressure line near power steering pump. (Scheme 53) PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Inspect PCM connectors and power steering pressure switch connector for corroded, pushed out or damaged terminals. Also, check for related Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If terminals are not corroded, pushed out or damaged and wiring harness is okay, test is complete. If terminals are corroded, pushed out or damaged, or wiring harness is damaged, repair as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-2»(ref-9482-S03161005942000102700000).
