DTC P0117: ECT SENSOR VOLTAGE TOO LOW Dodge Durango I

Note. Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor voltage is monitored when ignition is on and battery voltage is more than 10.4 volts. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when ECT sensor voltage at PCM is less than .8 volt for more than 3 seconds. Possible causes are: defective ECT sensor, defective PCM, or defective connectors or wiring.

  1. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is displayed and equal to zero, go to next step. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter is not displayed and equal to zero, go to step 5.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor connector. On 4.7L, ECT sensor is located near front of intake manifold and contains Black/Light Blue wire and Tan/Black wire in the connector. (Схема №36) On 5.2L and 5.9L, ECT sensor is located near thermostat housing on intake manifold and contains Black/Light Blue wire and Tan/Black wire in the connector. On all models, disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Tan/Black wire) on ECT sensor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Tan/Black wire between ECT sensor and PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  3. Ensure ignition is off. Reinstall ECT sensor connector and PCM connectors. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool in SENSORS mode, read ENG COOLANT TMP VLT. This is the ECT sensor voltage. While monitoring ECT sensor voltage, disconnect ECT sensor connector. If ECT sensor voltage does not change from less than one volt to more than 4.5 volts, go to next step. If ECT sensor voltage changes from less than one volt to more than 4.5 volts, replace ECT sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor connector and PCM connectors. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminals No. 1 (Black/Light Blue wire) and No. 2 (Tan/Black wire) on ECT sensor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Black/Light Blue wire and Tan/Black wire between PCM and ECT sensor as they are shorted together. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  5. Turn ignition off. Inspect wiring harness and connectors between ECT sensor and PCM. On 4.7L, ECT sensor is located near front of intake manifold and contains Black/Light Blue wire and Tan/Black wire in the connector. (Схема №36) On 5.2L and 5.9L, ECT sensor is located near thermostat housing on intake manifold and contains Black/Light Blue wire and Tan/Black wire in the connector. On all models, PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Inspect ECT sensor connector and PCM connectors for corroded, pushed out, miswired or damaged terminals. Also, check for related Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If no problems and no related TSBs exist, go to next step. If any problems exist, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
  6. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Wiggle wiring harness and connectors between PCM and ECT sensor while noting DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter does not change to zero while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, test is complete. If DTC SPECIFIC GOOD TRIP counter changes to zero while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
