Note. Crank reference signal is monitored when ignition is on. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when no signal is received from crankshaft position sensor during engine cranking and at least 3 camshaft position sensor signals have occurred. Possible causes are: defective crankshaft position sensor, defective tone wheel (4.7L), defective flexplate/flywheel (5.2L and 5.9L), defective PCM, stray signal for camshaft position sensor, or defective connectors or wiring. Crankshaft position sensor may also be referred to as CKP sensor. Camshaft position sensor may also be referred to as CMP sensor.

- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool in SENSORS mode, read CKP counts while cranking the engine. CKP counts are the counts for crankshaft position sensor. If CKP counts do not change while cranking the engine, go to next step. If CKP counts change while cranking the engine, go to step 14.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect crankshaft position sensor connector. On 4.7L, crankshaft position sensor is located on passenger's side of cylinder block, behind the starter. (Scheme 46) On 5.2L and 5.9L, crankshaft position sensor is located on passenger's side of engine, just above the flywheel. (Scheme 47)
- On all models, turn ignition on with engine off. Using voltmeter, check voltage at terminal No. 3 (Violet/White wire) on crankshaft position sensor connector. If voltage is more than 4.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 4.5 volts or less, repair open on Violet/White wire between crankshaft position sensor and PCM. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Turn ignition off. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminals No. 1 (Gray/Black wire) and No. 3 (Violet/White wire) on crankshaft position sensor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Gray/Black wire and Violet/White wire between PCM and crankshaft position sensor as they are shorted together. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using voltmeter, check voltage at terminal No. 1 (Gray/Black wire) on crankshaft position sensor connector. If voltage is less than 4.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 4.5-5.5 volts, go to step 11. If voltage is more than 5.5 volts, repair short to voltage on Gray/Black wire between crankshaft position sensor and PCM. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 1 (Gray/Black wire) on crankshaft position sensor connector and terminal No. 8 (Gray/Black wire) on PCM connector C1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Gray/Black wire between PCM and crankshaft position sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Ensure crankshaft position sensor connector and PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 1 (Gray/Black wire) on crankshaft position sensor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Gray/Black wire between PCM and crankshaft position sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Ensure crankshaft position sensor connector and PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminals No. 1 (Gray/Black wire) and No. 2 (Black/Light Blue wire) on crankshaft position sensor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Gray/Black wire and Black/Light Blue wire between PCM and crankshaft position sensor as they are shorted together. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Remove crankshaft position sensor. On 4.7L, inspect notches on tone wheel for damage and ensure tone wheel rotates while engine is cranked. Tone wheel is bolted to rear counterweight on crankshaft. These notches are used to operate the crankshaft position sensor. If notches are okay and tone wheel rotates while engine is cranked, reinstall crankshaft position sensor. Go to next step. If notches are damaged or tone wheel does not rotate while engine is cranked, repair or replace components as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). On 5.2L and 5.9L, inspect the 8 notches at outer edge of flexplate/flywheel for damage and ensure flexplate/flywheel rotates while engine is cranked. These notches are used to operate the crankshaft position sensor. If notches are okay and flexplate/flywheel rotates while engine is cranked, reinstall crankshaft position sensor. Go to next step. If notches are damaged or flexplate/flywheel does not rotate while engine is cranked, repair or replace flexplate/flywheel as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- On all models, ensure ignition is off and crankshaft position sensor connector is still disconnected. Reinstall PCM connectors. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black/Light Blue wire) on crankshaft position sensor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to step 13.
- Turn ignition off. Remove crankshaft position sensor. On 4.7L, inspect notches on tone wheel for damage and ensure tone wheel rotates while engine is cranked. Tone wheel is bolted to rear counterweight on crankshaft. These notches are used to operate the crankshaft position sensor. If notches are okay and tone wheel rotates while engine is cranked, reinstall crankshaft position sensor. Go to next step. If notches are damaged or tone wheel does not rotate while engine is cranked, repair or replace components as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black/Light Blue wire) on crankshaft position sensor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace crankshaft position sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Ensure ignition is off and crankshaft position sensor connector is still disconnected. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 2 (Black/Light Blue wire) on crankshaft position sensor connector and terminal No. 4 (Black/Light Blue wire) on PCM connector C1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000) If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Black/Light Blue wire between PCM and crankshaft position sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Turn ignition off. Inspect wiring harness and connectors between crankshaft position sensor and PCM. On 4.7L, crankshaft position sensor is located on passenger's side of cylinder block, behind the starter. (Scheme 46) On 5.2L and 5.9L, crankshaft position sensor is located on passenger's side of engine, just above the flywheel. (Scheme 47) On all models, PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Inspect crankshaft position sensor connector and PCM connectors for corroded, pushed out, miswired or damaged terminals. Also, check for related Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If no problems and no related TSBs exist, go to next step. If any problems exist, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Ensure ignition is off. Using oscilloscope and Probe (6801), backprobe terminal No. No. 8 (Gray/Black wire) on PCM connector C1. This is the crankshaft position sensor signal. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Observe crankshaft position sensor pattern on oscilloscope while wiggling wiring harness and connectors between PCM and crankshaft position sensor. If no irregularities exist in crankshaft position sensor signals while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, shut engine off. Go to next step. If irregularities exist in crankshaft position sensor signals while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, shut engine off. Check wiring harness and connectors between PCM and crankshaft position sensor. If wiring and connectors are okay, replace crankshaft position sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If wiring or connectors are defective, repair as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Ensure ignition is off. Using oscilloscope and probe, backprobe terminal No. 18 (Tan/Yellow wire) on PCM connector C1. This is the camshaft position sensor signal. Observe oscilloscope while turning ignition on to see if camshaft position sensor generates any pulse signals. DO NOT start engine. If camshaft position sensor does not generate any pulse signals, test is complete. If camshaft position sensor generates any pulse signals, replace camshaft position sensor. On 4.7L, camshaft position sensor is located on front corner of passenger's side cylinder head. (Scheme 48) On 5.2L and 5.9L, camshaft position sensor is located inside distributor. (Scheme 49) On all models, perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
