Note. Cam reference signal is monitored while engine is cranking or engine is running. DTC may be stored in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when at least 5 seconds have elapsed with crankshaft position sensor signals present and no signal from camshaft position sensor exists. Possible causes are: defective camshaft position sensor, defective tone wheel (4.7L), defective pulse ring (5.2L and 5.9L), defective PCM, stray signal for crankshaft position sensor, or defective connectors or wiring. Camshaft position sensor may also be referred to as CMP sensor. Crankshaft position sensor may also be referred to as CKP sensor.
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool in SENSORS mode, read CMP counts while cranking the engine. CMP counts are the counts for camshaft position sensor. If CMP counts do not change while cranking the engine, go to next step. If CMP counts change while cranking the engine, go to step 12.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect camshaft position sensor connector. On 4.7L, camshaft position sensor is located on front corner of passenger's side cylinder head. (Схема №48) On 5.2L and 5.9L, camshaft position sensor is located inside distributor. (Схема №49)
- On all models, turn ignition on with engine off. Using voltmeter, check voltage at terminal No. 3 (Violet/White wire) on camshaft position sensor connector. If voltage is more than 4.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 4.5 volts or less, repair open or high resistance on Violet/White wire between camshaft position sensor and PCM. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Turn ignition off. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminals No. 1 (Tan/Yellow wire) and No. 3 (Violet/White wire) on camshaft position sensor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Tan/Yellow wire and Violet/White wire between PCM and camshaft position sensor as they are shorted together. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using voltmeter, check voltage at terminal No. 1 (Tan/Yellow wire) on camshaft position sensor connector. If voltage is less than 4.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 4.5-5.5 volts, go to step 9. If voltage is more than 5.5 volts, repair short to voltage on Tan/Yellow wire between camshaft position sensor and PCM. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 1 (Tan/Yellow wire) on camshaft position sensor connector and terminal No. 18 (Tan/Yellow wire) on PCM connector C1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Tan/Yellow wire between PCM and camshaft position sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Ensure camshaft position sensor connector and PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 1 (Tan/Yellow wire) on camshaft position sensor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on Tan/Yellow wire between PCM and camshaft position sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Ensure camshaft position sensor connector and PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminals No. 1 (Tan/Yellow wire) and No. 2 (Black/Light Blue wire) on camshaft position sensor connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair Tan/Yellow wire and Black/Light Blue wire between PCM and camshaft position sensor as they are shorted together. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Turn ignition off. Ensure camshaft position sensor connector is still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black/Light Blue wire) on camshaft position sensor connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to step 11.
- On 4.7L, remove camshaft position sensor. Inspect tone wheel for damage and ensure tone wheel rotates while engine is cranked. Tone wheel is located on front of passenger's side camshaft, directly behind the camshaft sprocket. If tone wheel is okay and rotates while engine is cranked, replace camshaft position sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If tone wheel is damaged or fails to rotate while engine is cranked, repair or replace components as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). On 5.2L and 5.9L, remove camshaft position sensor from distributor. Inspect pulse ring for damage and ensure pulse ring rotates while engine is cranked. Pulse ring is located in the distributor below camshaft position sensor. (Схема №49) If pulse ring is okay and rotates while engine is cranked, replace camshaft position sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If pulse ring is damaged or fails to rotate while engine is cranked, repair or replace pulse ring as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Ensure ignition is off and camshaft position sensor connector is still disconnected. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 2 (Black/Light Blue wire) on camshaft position sensor connector and terminal No. 4 (Black/Light Blue wire) on PCM connector C1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000) If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Black/Light Blue wire between PCM and camshaft position sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Ensure ignition is off. Using oscilloscope and Probe (6801), backprobe terminal No. 18 (Tan/Yellow wire) on PCM connector C1. This is the camshaft position sensor signal. PCM is located at passenger's side front corner of engine compartment on inner fender panel. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Observe camshaft position sensor pattern on oscilloscope while wiggling wiring harness and connectors between PCM and camshaft position sensor. On 4.7L, camshaft position sensor is located on front corner of passenger's side cylinder head. (Схема №48) On 5.2L and 5.9L, camshaft position sensor is located inside distributor. (Схема №49) On all models, if no irregularities exist in camshaft position sensor signals while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, shut engine off. Go to next step. If irregularities exist in camshaft position sensor signals while wiggling wiring harness and connectors, shut engine off. Check wiring harness and connectors between PCM and camshaft position sensor. If wiring and connectors are okay, replace camshaft position sensor. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000). If wiring or connectors are defective, repair as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Ensure ignition is off. Inspect wiring harness and connectors between camshaft position sensor and PCM. Inspect camshaft position sensor connector and PCM connectors for corroded, pushed out, miswired or damaged terminals. Also, check for related Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If no problems and no related TSBs exist, go to next step. If any problems exist, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. Perform «TEST VER-5»(ref-9482-S35719050532000102700000).
- Ensure ignition is off. Using oscilloscope and probe, backprobe terminal No. 8 (Gray/Black wire) on PCM connector C1. This is the crankshaft position sensor signal. Observe oscilloscope while turning ignition on to see if crankshaft position sensor generates any pulse signals. DO NOT start engine. If crankshaft position sensor does not generate any pulse signals, test is complete. If crankshaft position sensor generates any pulse signals, replace crankshaft position sensor. On 4.7L, crankshaft position sensor is located on passenger's side of cylinder block, behind the starter. (Схема №46) On 5.2L and 5.9L, crankshaft position sensor is located on passenger's side of engine, just above the flywheel.
