DOHC Diesel Engine 3 illustrations ~531 words

Oil Pan and Cylinder Block Base Plate

The cylinder block base plate (1) houses the oil pump, oil pick-up tube and splash shields. The base plate is attached to the cylinder block by means of bolts. The bolt heads are protected by blanking covers.

The oil pan (2) is attached to the cylinder block base plate by means of bolts and is sealed with silicone sealant. A drain plug is installed in the underside of the oil pan.

Oil Pump

The oil pump (1) has an internal strainer and is secured to the cylinder block by means of three bolts. One of these bolts also secures a splash shield. The oil pump is chain driven from the crankshaft and delivers oil to the cylinder block, where it is distributed via channels to all moving parts of the engine.

The oil pump is shown with the engine inverted and the cylinder block base plate removed from the cylinder block.

Oil Pick-Up Tube

The oil pick-up tube (1) is attached to the underside of the cylinder block base plate by means of two bolts and locates within the oil pump body when the base plate is assembled to the cylinder block.

Splash Shields

The M9R engine is equipped with two splash shields. A splash shield (2) is located adjacent to the oil pump and is secured to the cylinder block by means of a bolt (1). This splash shield is shown with the engine inverted and the cylinder block base plate removed from the cylinder block.

Another splash shield is secured to the flywheel end of the base plate by means of a bolt (3).

Oil Filter and Cooler Assembly

The oil filter and cooler assembly is secured to the cylinder block by means of bolts and comprises:

  • Oil filter housing (1)
  • Plate type heat exchanger (3)
  • Coolant inlet connector (5)
  • Coolant outlet connector (4)

The heat exchanger is secured to the oil filter housing by means of screws. Engine coolant is circulated through the assembly by way of two coolant hoses that are secured by clamps to the nozzles. The nozzles are secured to the filter housing by means of bolts. A coolant system schematic can be found in “Functional Description: Coolant System”.

The oil pressure switch (2) is located in the oil filter housing.

The oil filter and cooler are available as a complete assembly comprising filter housing, heat exchanger, filter, coolant connectors and pressure switch. The filter and pressure switch are also available separately.

To gain access to the oil filter assembly and engine drain plug for maintenance, the engine undershield must first be removed.

Dipstick and Dipstick Guide Tube

A.Front view with oil filling hose removed from connection (4)
B.View from right headlamp

The dipstick guide tube is contained in a plastic housing (1) that is secured to the cylinder block by means of a bolt (3). The dipstick is positioned in the guide tube by a screw fitting (2).

A connection (4) on the side of the guide tube housing is connected by a hose (6) to the oil filler assembly (5) that is attached to the air cleaner housing on top of the engine.
