Cylinder Block
The cylinder block is made of cast iron. The illustration shows the rotating parts that are housed in the cylinder block.
The piston is cooled by an oil jet in the cylinder block, adjacent to the cylinder bore.
The crankshaft is made of steel; its lateral play is set by adjusting shims.
Number 1 cylinder is located at the timing (non-flywheel) end of the engine.
Cylinder Head Gasket
The cylinder head gasket is available as one thickness. The profile of the gasket matches the sealing surface of the cylinder block to ensure correct installation.
Piston Selection
Piston selection is only necessary when piston protrusion is outside the specified tolerance. For the M9R 780 engine, adjustment to the piston protrusion can only be achieved by piston selection.
A choice of five pistons with different pin heights is available from Aftersales in order to achieve correct piston protrusion.

Cylinder Block Base Plate
The cylinder block base plate is constructed of aluminium and is secured to the cylinder block by means of bolts. The bolt heads are protected by blanking covers.
The base plate acts as reinforcement and improves the engine and transmission acoustics.
