Hydraulic Valve Lifters, Checking Audi A8 D2

Mechanical 1 illustration ~165 words
CAUTIONAfter installing new valve lifters, wait about 30 minutes before starting the engine (otherwise the valves will strike the pistons). After working on the valvetrain and lifters, carefully crank the engine by hand at least two full revolutions to make sure that the valves do not strike the pistons.

Note. Store valve lifters that have been removed on a clean surface with the contact surface (camshaft end) facing downward. Valve lifters can not be repaired or adjusted. Faulty lifters must be replaced. Irregular valve noise during starting is normal.

  1. Start and run engine until radiator coolant fan has come on at least once.
  2. Increase engine speed to about 2500 RPM for two minutes.

If irregular valve noises disappear but re-occur again when driving short distances

  1. Replace oil retention valves. See «OIL RETENTION VALVES, REPLACING»(ref-196861-S33348295472005100900000) .

If irregular noise does NOT stop, locate faulty hydraulic valve lifters as follows

Scheme 73
  1. Remove cylinder head cover.
  2. Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until cam lobe of valve lifter being checked is pointing upward.
  3. Use wooden or plastic wedge to press valve lifter down. see scheme 82: Pressing Valve Lifter Down
  4. While pressing down, use feeler gauge to check clearance between camshaft and lifter.

If 0.20 mm (0.0079 in.) or greater

  1. Replace valve lifter.
