Remove
- 1. Remove piston with con-rod – see operation “Piston with Con-rod, Remove and Install”
- 2. Remove squared ring (1), tapered ring (2) then oil control ring (3x part) (3) from piston (4), in that order • Support piston con-rod in suitable vice • Use piston ring pliers (5) (commercially available) – Thoroughly clean 3x ring location groove of piston using removed piston ring as scraper
- 3. Measure piston ring horizontal clearance • Install new piston ring (3) into location groove of piston (1) • Use feeler gauge (2) inserted between piston ring and location groove to determine horizontal clearance Squared ring 0.02 - 0.04 mm Tapered ring 0.02 - 0.04 mm Oil control ring 0.01- 0.03 mm
Note. Maximum permissible horizontal clearance :-
- 4. Measure piston ring vertical clearance • Clean cylinder bore • Install new squared piston ring into 3x location of cylinder bore, position ring at the uppermost point, middle point and lowest point, then measure • Use feeler gauge (commercially available) to determine clearance Squared ring 0.30 - 0.50 mm Tapered ring 0.30 - 0.50 mm Oil control ring 0.40 - 1.40 mm
Note. Maximum permissible vertical clearance:-
Install
- 5. Ensure when installing 3x new piston ring that marking “Top” on rings face upwards and that squared ring (1) and tapered ring (2) gaps (A), and (B) are offset by 120° (arrowed), with lower and upper ring of oil control ring (3) (3x part) overlapping gap (C) (arrowed) between 25mm - 50mm
- 6. Install oil control ring (3x part), tapered ring, then squared ring to piston, in that order • Apply clean lubricant to piston and 3x new piston ring • Install spring (2), then lower and upper ring (1) of oil control ring, in that order • Use piston ring pliers – Ensure 3x piston ring rotate freely on piston
- 7. Install piston with con-rod – see operation “Piston with Con-rod, Remove and Install”
