Engine Management System GMPT–E15
The Z 22 SE engine is fitted with engine management system GMPT–E15, newly developed by Powertrain.
One component of the engine management system GMPT–E15 is a DIS ignition module. The two primary windings are activated and deactivated via the ignition stages in the engine control unit. Ignition voltage is simultaneously fed to either cylinders 1 and 4 or cylinders 2 and 3 via the secondary coils. The third cylinder is always the first cylinder to be injected and ignited when the engine is started. The ignition voltage required for the cylinder containing a combustible mixture (compression cycle) is greater (10–25 kV) than that for the cylinder used for the emission cycle (5 kV). The latter determines the direction of flow between the two spark plugs. The direction of flow is detected via special sensors in the ignition cassette, and the injection impulse can be allocated to the pertinent cylinder. These sensors replace the camshaft sensor. Should the sensors fail, the injection impulse is effected for both cylinders simultaneously. Emergency engine operation is guaranteed.
