Piston Rings, Replace
Remove piston - see operation "Piston with Con-rod, Remove and Install". Remove piston rings with piston ring pliers (see illus. I).
Remove hardened carbon from grooves using broken piston ring ground to a wedge.
Tension piston ring in cylinder and measure gap with feeler gauge (see illus. II). Piston ring sizes, permissible piston ring gaps - see Technical Data.
Install piston rings (see illus. III). Oil scraper ring: Offset ring gaps of steel band rings by 25 to 50 mm in each case to the left or right relative to the gap of the intermediate ring. Piston rings: Offset ring gaps by approx. 120 ° . Second piston ring with identification "TOP" upwards.
