Ignition System Description and Operation Opel Agila B

The electronic ignition system consists of the following:

  • Engine control module (ECM).
  • Ignition coil assembly.
  • Spark plugs.
  • Camshaft position (CMP) sensor - Intake.
  • Camshaft position (CMP) sensor - Exhaust (K12B with VVT).
  • Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
  • Throttle position (TP) sensor.
  • Engine coolant temperature.
  • Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor.
  • Mass air flow (MAF) sensor.
  • Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor.
  • Knock sensor.

ECM

The ECM monitors the engine and vehicle conditions through the signals from the sensors, determines the most suitable ignition timing and ignition time, then sends a signal to the ignition coil assembly.

Cmp and Ckp Sensor

Using signals from the CMP and CKP sensors, the ECM identifies the specific cylinder whose piston is on the compression stroke, detects the crank angle, then adjusts the initial ignition timing automatically.

Ignition Coil Assembly

Each cylinder is equipped with an ignition coil assembly (ignitor and ignition coil); the secondary voltage, which occurs in the ignition coil is sent directly to the spark plug . The ignition system has no distributor and high-tension leads.

The signal(s) are sent from the CMP sensor(s) to the ECM in order to control each ignition coil independently through the ignitor.

The ignition coil assembly turns the current flow to the primary coil on and off, according to the signal from ECM. When the current flow to the primary coil is turned off, a high voltage is induced in the secondary coil. One ignition coil is in charge of ignition of one cylinder only.
